What would you think of expanding the #18 Legacy Jersey to the other sports at LSU?

I read about Matt Mauck starting this tradition when Richard Dickson started wearing it.

I just thought it would be cool to extend it to the other sports - make it university-wide. I asked Herb Vincent about it; his response was that he would mention it to other coaches. That's the right way to do it - I'm just wondering what the fan base thinks of the idea?

It wasn't originally some great thing to wear the number. It was just guys passing it down to their friends on their own. The coaches co-opted that and now made it something bigger than it was ever supposed to be. I see no reason to continue to inflate it even further.

#18 Tradition = Sasquatch Myth

EDT: We(fans) made this up. Sports fans always want to believe in something bigger then their self.

Mauck made it famous because he was our QB that led us to a NC in 03... Can't hate on the significance of the number, it means you are a SR leader with ability to make the right decisions... I think the tradition carry's on and #7 will end up going to the great athlete from now on...

Coaches may have had something to do with the mystique, but there is a reason--Jacob hester in 2007. We do not win the NC without him, and I think the coaches loved his heart, desire, and toughness. He passed it to Richard Dickson, and he passed it to Richard Murphy. BTW, who is wearing 18 this year?

As for as I am concerned lets retire the number for hester.

Didn't Braylon Edwards start one at Michigan with the number 1 for wide outs?

I know 18 isn't a "traditional" basketball number, but we've seen exceptions. Didn't Havlicek (sp?) wear 17?

you can't wear numbers like that in college or high school. Only in the pros.

Here's what I know - Rosetta can back me up.

Mauck passed it to Hester. Reasons are unknown, but he did it in consult w/ coaches, trainer, and equipment manager.

The recipient does not know he's got the number until the first day of spring training. I read that the coaches talked to Brandon Taylor prior to the end of last year, but the article in TP only mentioned he was a candidate.

The last owner, coaches, trainer, and manager consult on the next player to wear it, with inputs from previous owners.

It doesn't just go to seniors, Hester wasn't a senior in 04.

Mauck's idea was that the player should exemplify leadership on and off the field.

I've seen where numbers have been passed from one player to another - the cool thing about 18 is that the coaches buy into it and won't duplicate the number on the roster.
