I have been hunting since I was a little kiddo. I have never been duck hunting though and I would like to start. What are some beginner tips of the trade? I have a benelli supernova (I know its pump how ghey). I have waders and a few duck calls that I am a novice at for sure.

Thanks and can't wait

Go to a refuge where no hunting is allowed and enjoy the sights and sounds of what a duck does when he is not under the influence of hunters. If you can mimmick a hen sitting on the water calling to a group of flying ducks you will be ahead of most. Also pay attention to flying ducks as they circle. Their body language can tell the tale. When you think you have a good handle on those things you are almost through the prefix and can start on chapter one of a long book. Go ahead and buy 2 or 3 hundred decoys, 3 or 4 old beat up jon boats, a handfull of broken boat motors, a few more shotguns, try to train a half dozen labs, and tell your wife it last 60 days a year!

good luck! nothin wrong with a pump shotgun though. a simple machine means less chance it will frick up and jam. especially if you are slopping through mud on your way to that honey hole

I agree it is a great gun. I love this thing. I went to the skeet range a few times recently with a few buddies and they downed it because it was a pump. I love the feel of a pump personally.

Out shot them on singles and doubles. Not triples though.

stay single... pretty much had it out with the last girlfriend over duck season... Apparently she didnt like leaving parties before midnight so I could wake up at 3 am. Leaving her arse in the bed alone to go shoot 2 woodducks after walking 2 mile. getting water in my waders. in 32 F.
And using my $800 shotgun to keep myself from going completely under water.

Where do you plan to hunt? Who are you going to hunt with? Are they experienced or new to ducks?

Public land in central Ark and a buddy's place around here too. I'm hunting with experienced hunters and one damn good caller. They usually do real good so I'm pumped to go with them I just don't wanna be THAT guy who doesn't have a clue.

Well in that case you should always bring breakfast and hot chocolate for a donation. Other than that sit back and learn from them. Don't be the first to pull the trigger. Wait until its go-time!

usually if you are with experienced hunters, they'll basically tell you when to shoot and all that

The best way I can explain Duck Hunting.

Dress up in all of your cold weather clothing.

Turn on your shower to cold.

Stand under the shower and start tearing up twenty dollar bills.

And somehow..you can't wait to do it the next day.

OK, all that is great news. They should be able to teach you a ton.

A few pieces of advice. Loose the call for now. You don't want to screw up what he is doing. BUT, get him to teach you some things when the ducks aren't flying. Listen to his cadence, when he calls and when he doesn't.

Keep your face down. Don't moon beam the ducks. I would strongly suggest getting a face mask.

Never ever be late in the morning.

Believe it or not, you are that guy. Take their ribbing. It'll be fun. Also, make sure you take all the tags off any new clothing.

Ask a ton of questions. If they are good guys, they will be more than willing to answer them.

Best of luck and have fun!

be safe and just shoot into your"lane" of the duck blind. Dont shoot over peoples heads, or swing your gun too far left or right. Keep your gun on safety until you are ready to pull the trigger. We had a long time guide killed here last year by a novice hunter, very sad. With that said it wont take long after you crunch your first duck that you will be addicted. Buy a black iron pot!

Wow that is terrible. Safety is definitely something that needs to be stressed while any kind of hunting.
