I inherited my grandfather's coin and stamp collection years ago. I haven't looked at them in probably 10 years but I remember one coin being valued at $5,000.

I have a trust appraiser I am taking them to soon. Would it be stupid to sell these?

I don't think it would be stupid. Gold and silver are pretty high right now. Unless you wanted to hold onto them for another 5-10 years.

If you have kids I promise you they would appreciate you holding on to that stuff. The sentimental value is much more.....

I'd have a hard time selling anything like that inherited from a grandparent.

That being said, if you are looking at the investment vehicle strategy, then I would say you may want to sell the coins, purchase individual equities in blue chips, and then pass those stocks on to your grandkids.

Look on ebay to see what some of the coins sell for. That will give you an idea as to what someone is willing to pay for the coin. Compare that to the appraised value.

The fact they belonged to your grandfather is priceless to you.
Any coin worth $5g's 10 years ago would be worth much more today.

If you really feel inclined to sell the coins, check out...

Greysheet

An honest coin dealer will offer you 90% of "greysheet" value which is the price that dealers usually trade between themselves. This is still well below retail value but this is probably the best you will do.
