So a buddy and I are going to start the first leg of our grand slam next spring with the Rio's of Texas.
Any advice on a good place/ranch to go in Texas?

We've hunted so many years together in various places (KS, MO, MS, AL) but want to go on a ranch where things are at most semi guided but good chances at birds.

Thanks for any input.

Are you planning on taking all 4 subspecies in a single season? If so, you should be starting with an Osceola in Florida. The FL turkey season opens earliest and will be closing as many of the other subspecies are just beginning.

Have fun, I've recorded two world slams and a few grand slams now. Its a blast and I look forward to the season each year..

The Eastern,.... these are my first two turkeys. I called them up in Hogansville, GA on opening day of the Spring 2001 season.

The Rio Grande,.... this bird was actually the toughest turkey for me. Both of these Rio's were killed on public land in the Fishlake National Forest.

The Osceola,... Theres something very majestic about seeing an Osceola glowing in the bright Florida sunshine..

The Merriam,... 15 minutes of glory. I got both these toms only a few minutes apart while hunting in South Dakota.

The Gould,... My most anticipated hunt ever and it didnt dissappoint!

The Ocellated.. Quite possibly the most beautiful bird I've laid eyes on..

Thanks for the awesome pics.

Gets me fired up just seeing all those birds in one group. Hopefully I will have shots just like those to show afterward.

Were just going to do one hunt per year until all are complete. We both have young sons, so we'd like to complete them together before beginning their slams.

Did you go the public route everywhere that you could or were most paid hunts?

I plan on going the public route. Although at the moment my Rio came from private land.

Possibly look into Black Kettle WMA in OK for Rios.

Head to the Gila Wilderness Area for your Merriam. You will not be disappointed.

I've done a mix of public and private. For Rios, Goulds, and Ocellated I went private. The rest are public and recently most of my hunts have been with acquaintances I've met over the years and traded hunts with.

Living in Osceola country affords me the opportunity to have lots of guys that live in Easterns, Rios, or Merriams country who are willing to trade a hunt with me.

Nothing is better than hunting with a local guy who knows the lay of the land and the behavior pattern of the birds. Plus you get to hunt for the cost of a license and a flight. Cutting out the outfitter saves a lot of cash..
