| President Obama raised $86 million in first quarter (Posted on 7/13/11 at 7:55 am)
quote:
President Barack Obama has shattered first quarter fundraising records for a White House incumbent by raising $86 million for the first quarter – dwarfing the 2012 GOP field’s total take and breezing past his own target of $60 million. The shock-and-awe showing was announced by Obama 2012 Campaign Manager Jim Messina, wearing his signature blue dress shirt sans tie, in a web video blasted to supporters in the pre-dawn hours on Wednesday, two days before the 15,000-page combined Obama for America and Democratic National Committee report is due to go up on a government web site. Earlier this month, Democratic fundraising sources close to the campaign told POLITICO that Obama would easily achieve his goal of besting former President George W. Bush’s combined take of $50.1 million at the same point in the 2004 election cycle. The total amount Obama raised in the first three months of 2011 also amounted to more than twice the $35 million raised collectively by the announced field of Republican presidential candidates.
LINK That's pretty damn impressive.

Too bad he isn't as good of President as he is a fundraiser.

Doesn't that $86mm number include the total raised by the DNC? Thought I heard that this morning.

No. It's the amount raised just by Obama.

Yeah no it's not. Knew I heard this.

The dollar total for Obama this quarter, announced by his campaign manager in a video message to supporters this morning, reflects $47 million raised for the Obama for America presidential campaign and an additional $38 million raised jointly with the Democratic National Committee.

Meh. So he'll have a nice little nest egg when we send him back to Chicago next year. Bully for him.

I hear he also broke the record for fundraising from the White House. That may have also broken the law, but that's another thread.

If you were going to buy a politician, wouldn't you want to invest in one who you know will at least get the nomination? ETA: I mean why in the world would I give 500k to Mitt Romney right now when I'm not even sure he'll get the nom? Once Barry has a challenger, I'd expect that person to get a lot of money. Also, the general weakness of the GOP field is contributing a lot to Barry's sucess.

Just tthink of how many shovel ready jobs that money will be able to support? Of course the jobs will be shovelling BS, but just think of the lasting economic benefits.

Now, money in politics is "impressive"...NOT a problem. I agree with you. But, I can recall all the whining about W and his big money backers and 'all those contributions MUST come with strings', etc. All I know is "Garbage In, Garbage Out" and 'we' have been putting a LOT of garbage into public offices. Dems and Reps. Congress and White House.....for years.

Actually, yeah, it is going to create a bunch of jobs...at least for the short term.

Is that a fact too, or is it like his "contributions raised" and you actually have no idea what you're talking about?

Do you in any way doubt that campaigns employ people?

So do chemical spills. Should we start pouring waste out all over the place? I know what you mean...it is just so damned disheartening.

I was being facetious. Most of the money will be spent to buy television advertising. I doubt the advetising agencies will be hiring too many additional workers. Neither will the broadcasters. The money will just end up in the hands of those who are already employed, and/or owners of the companies hired. Any jobs created will be the indirect of additional spending by individuals rather than by the businesses.

the (D)'s have the benefit of knowing the money donated is definitely backing the for sure (D) candidate. i'm sure once the (R) field is whittled down to a single candidate, that person will start raking it in. especially if it's Perry. That guy can raise money.
