A virus has infected my computer and wont allow me to do anything. I run windows XP and can't even restore my system as every time I try the virus (Antivirus XP 2012) comes up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I cannot access the internet from this laptop.

Take it to a specialist geek who will most likely have to format your hard drive and reload your entire operating system. Of course, you will lose all your non-backed up data, but sh*t happens, especially when you get a virus on your PC. It's happened to me twice and that was the result.

I now back up all my files twice a week.

Tried rebooting and using safe mode but the error kept coming up in safe mode. Doesn't matter what I click on. I have a desktop at home that I can send a program to a thumb drive and try it. I think that this is my only option.

I've tried this a couple of times recently and it seems to work well. If it doesn't get rid of the problem, it should at least get you to a point where you can back up your files.

Download the file, run it then burn the files it creates to a DVD or thumb drive. After that, hit F12 to get to your boot menu and boot to whichever device you have the file on.

It runs a mini-Windows Defender, but outside of Windows. Good luck!

With a good computer, download ccleaner and install it to the screwed up computer with a flash drive.

piriform.com

There are 4 files you should download:
ccleaner
defraggler
recuva
speccy

ccleaner is the one you need. The other three are just cool.

Let me see if I can remember how to boot directly to the antivirus program. There's a way to do it but for the life of me I can't recall how to force it.

Start in safe mode without networking.

Find "Antivirus XP 2012" and delete it (or run a trusted antivirus/malware program to delete it)

If that doesn't work, try System restore while in safe mode.

Can I run system restore under another profile on my computer to restore the whole thing? There are two profiles on my computer (administrator and my profile).

go to your internet settings and uncheck the box that says use a proxy server.

download malwarebytes and run it. If you have to download to a thumb drive and install it like that.

If that doesn't work go to bleepingcomputer.com and download comobfix to a thumb drive. I've had to use it for that very same virus.

I was able to restore it and am now running malwarebytes and microsoft security essentials. downloaded and ran TDSS killer earlier and none of these programs have found anything. I know the virus is still here, i just can't find it.
