Let me start off by saying I grew up playing Atari and Saga.

My son has Halo Reach and we enjoy the hell out of the game. We just started playing, he ask me for help in certain spots(ie-what to do, where to go, etc.)

The first few times we played we would blow through the ammo in the guns they give you. We pick up other peoples guns and of course we run out of ammo.

I have seen the health "packs" that you can get, but for the life of me cant find any ammo "stashs". Do they even exist? where can I find them?

Pick up guns of the same type you are using.

For general strategies, control the power guns i.e. the sword, shotgun, rockets, and sniper and ALWAYS RUSH ROCKETS.

Yes there are ammo/gun stashs through out the game. Usually around drop points or Marine/humane facilites. The look like gun closets. They also have covenant stashs inside their structures.

Takes a little bit of exploring, but you'll find them.

If you are playing online, there are no weapon stashes, but you should have no problem finding ammo by running over/picking up dropped guns. If you are playing campaign, there are drop ships and weapon stashes every now and then, but you may have to just pick up Covenant weapons if you run out of ammo. You can also trade guns with non-Spartan allies.
