Good movie. Recognized a lot of lines that I have heard here on TD but never "got".
What was the deal with the cowboy narrator? He seemed like a very important character who had absolutely nothing to do with the plot.

That's why he was awesome.

Since the entire movie is a sequence of genre parody, he represented the grandfatherly wisdom that was trying to to be the moralizing/rationalizing presence in the movie (por ejemple, Morgan Freeman's stereotypical role). But there was actually nothing to learn, much like the lesson of several of the Coens movies. His presence was just a sleight of hand, an irony.

Virgil Earp is never out of character.

It's all so meaningless. It's exhausting.

does anything in the big lebowski really have anything to do with anything? that's what makes it such genius. random shite that happens to make a complicated plot.
but i will admit i didn't get it my first viewing, the second time the bulb went off and i saw the light.

Big Lebowski
One of the most overrated movies in history, and I say that with almost zero hyperbole.
It's decent at best. The best thing about it is how quotable it is.

"sometimes there's a man... I won't say a hero, 'cause, what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talkin' about the Dude here. Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's the Dude"

Something you realize the more you watch the film is there really is no plot. If Seinfeld is the show about nothing, The Big Lebowski is the film about nothing. The entire movie pretty much evaluates the pointlessness of every single thing every single character does. The plot of the film literally resolves itself by the time the Dude actually figures it out. This is the reason most people hate the film watching it for the first time (myself included) is that you actually try to keep up with the plot and the twists and turns when that was never the films intention. Once you realize this, the film becomes more and more enjoyable with each viewing.
