For example, if you email someone an excel spreadsheet, can you find out if they forwarded it to someone else?

TIA

Word the email like a chain letter and promise good luck and/or wealth and someone will send it back to you.

Eventually. You'll see where it went.

Not in any practical manner. One suggestion:
1. Convert the file to PDF and place restrictions and password on the PDF.

Thought about that, but figured they could just share the password.

I'm trying to see if a document is getting sent to a competitor.

Send the message with a self-destructing device attached?

If you're a big dick at your company then you could probably have the IT dept check their emails from the server to see if they forwarded it.

if they were smart they wouldn't have forwarded it from their work account but instead sent it from a personal email based email account (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) but most people aren't that smart and there's a chance they were sloppy. Most company handbooks state that your email is not yours and that the company can look through it anytime they want. IT could probably do this from a remote location or check the Exchange Server and the suspected person would never know.

Ah. Gotcha.

Don't know how you would do that. Sorry.

You could send it as a google doc, but I don't know if you can prevent copying and exporting.

Not a chance. Can you say invasion of privacy?

What privacy if I send someone a confidential file that is for them only. Plus, they have services that track how many times an email is open and for how long such as constant contact, etc.

Yes, but you are basically wanting access to another companies email server, which will never happen. Make them sign an NDA if you are so nervous, then you can sue them if they pass it on

I was thinking more on the lines of tracking it through who opens the file. Maybe a file hosting service is the direction I should go. I know box.net lets you know when someone downloads your file, but I don't think it logs the IP address.
