A friend and I just bought a boat, and we are taking it down to Dularge this weekend. Neither of us have ever fished there, and we are really not all that experienced in the marsh in general. We are going in completely blind. Where do we go? What do we use? Where will they be this time of year? Any advice or tips are greatly appreciated.

We just bought a camp down there (I'm from Houma) and am actually kind of in the same boat. Not sure where the hotspots are in the area...though I've heard just drifting along the banks of Lake DeCade is a good place to start. Be careful if you go exploring though, most of the lakes/bayous around Dularge and Lake DeCade can get pretty shallow.

I'm more familiar with the Cocodrie area, fwiw...

in the summer, head to the gulf. Lake Decade is way better in the winter

True.

I'm only really familiar with Decade since I frequent the Cajun Bahamas during the Summer, lol.

Find someone who is very familiar with the area to follow for a weekend. Getting to the Gulf from Falgout Canal is fairly complicated and can get tricky even with a GPS. Like the other guy said, the trout are mostly on the coast right now which is a 40 minute run through several bayous and lakes.

If I were you, i'd put in at Jug's on Hwy 315, head to Grand Pass and hang a left into Sister Lake. Fish the leeward bank for reds and the game warden camp (island out in the middle of the lake with an old structure on it) for trout. You can stick with a cork with a tout under it and do fine.

That sounds great. Thanks.

FWIW, we bought a skiff, so we should not have any problems with the shallows.

Do we need to get out into the actual gulf to get the trout, or is it sufficient to get very close to the gulf? I ask because the same skiff that allows me to go real shallow will cause me to get my arse handed to me in any kind of open water.

I would stick to red fishing until fall. Trout are outside only right now.

There are still trout in Mechant and Sister Lake, its just mostly small fish. Right now, look for birds in both big lakes and there will 100% be small trout under them. Good luck and be safe

This, follow them to the gulf and map it on your GPS, otherwise you will bottom out in the mud somewhere
