NOPE...likely have some flooding, but if they can get the barge placed properly the city should be alright.

No Morgan City should be fine, assuming there are no levee failures. There expecting approx. 7' of water on the Seawalls. The biggest concern is Lakeside subdvision because the levees there only 6' foot for the most part. The barge in the chene is expected to retard approx 60% of the flow which should keep the water within the perm. levees already in place. There are alot of wild rumors going on around in about the crops planning to blow up levees in the Stephensville area that have alot of people in a panic.

Also if anyone is interested St. Mary Parish O.E.P. has a facebook set up with a bunch of aerial pictures of the flooding so far.

Correct, Lakeside and some of the other subdivisions will see some flooding but the majority of MC will be dry.....as long as the 22' seawalls do what they are supposed to

You do realize that this is more as a pub stunt to protect Terrebonne Parish?.....and once the water goes over and around the barge, it's pretty much useless.

I am in Terrebonne and see the futility in it. I really don't think it will accomplish anything as the barge won't be a water tight seal like a levee and any rushing water will quickly scour its own channel around. Sounds like a waste of money IMO.

HUGE waste of money. Somebody is making some money while they still can. Hope it works, or at least delays the inevitable.

HOLY shite look at the gap b/w the barge and the bottom contour. Hopefully the Chene won't have enough CFS coming through it to undermine. Can anyone verify where this barge is supposed to be placed? Also I am assuming that they plan on closing the locks on the intracoastal at the Atchafalaya since this would all be for naught without doing that.

Judging by the red arrow on that map the barge would be sunk south of the intracoastal at a point where flooding south of it wouldn't matter. Sure it would close of bayou chene from back feeding the intracoastal from the south if the water would even do that and if the locks are closed that would stop water from the west but it does nothing to stop the water coming from Lake Palourde from moving east. It will actually stop that water from draining south and force it east to Houma

Help me out as I am not seeing the logic in this project.

They show the location on the new drawing. The water will be ripping through the woods around the barge. Here's the site for the locks showing the differential in height from the west side (Atchafalaya side) and the East side. It was exactly 3.1 feet a few days ago. As the river level creeps up, the differential will increase. Exactly what the final differential will be is the question. If the river get to 12.5 as projected, will the East side be 9.0 or so? That would be catastrophic.

Also, the sheet piles go all the way across. The barge is behind them and the tugs behind the barge.

Wrong ! The same thing was done in 73 and it worked like a charm. This year they might also drive sheets and then weld he barges to the sheets.

Berry Bros is doing the construction, my little brother will be running the job if they do it.

No it didnt work like a charm in '73....look at these pictures from when the tried this same project.....they waited until after the water came up before they sunk the barge...notice the difference in the water on each side of the barge. Notice in the color photo
that the water to the left is the water that the barge was meant to hold back. It is higher than that on the right.

So being that the Morganza is predicted to be open sometime this weekend, dont you think this job should already be mobilized? The job will take approx a week or so once they get started.. Guess they will just wait until the water gets down here again.

With no levee to tie into it seems useless as once the water gets into the trees it is going to go where it wants.
