If your budget allows, JL Audio makes the best equipment in my opinion.
If you're looking for something more reasonable, Sony also makes a very good speaker. It's pretty close in quality but you're not paying for the JL name.
How loud are you trying to go? Depending on your stereo, you may not need an amp.

We did a budget upgrade on my dads last party barge. 4 Polk 6.5" speakers and a refirbished Sony amp. That amp is nothing special but for $69 from ebay it sounded fine. For the $ Polk makes great marine speakers. Kicker, Memphis Audio, Alpine all make good marine stereo gear. JL Audio and Focal speakers are great but pricey also.
If your amp is in a dry location I wouldn't worry about getting a marine model. On his we added an access hatch to the console and mounted it under there.

Memphis audio makes good marine equipment.
If its used in freshwater, you dont have to use marine speakers. Just put a good grill over them to prevent sun damage to the cone.
Even if not "needed" I would recommend an amp, it will make the sound much clearer and louder in an open air environment.

Fusion Marine Audio systems
I installed one last year in my bay boat and have been completely satisfied. My Ipod fits into the stereo and is completely water proof. Once inserted the stereo turns into your ipod. So you can change playlist, songs, or whatever right off the stereo faceplate. Speakers also rock.
Goo Luck

I disagree with this. Out of everything, I consider the amp the most important one to be a Marine Grade unit. I had a non-marine amp mounted in the closed bow of my ski boat (no water whatsoever up there) It still fried due to condensation during a humid day. Replaced with a Marine amp and no issues for 3 years now.

Different strokes I guess. I have marine amps now because they came in the boat but probably 80% of the installs I see in other boats use regular amps. Most of the shops I've talked to recomend the same thing. But, its all about peace of mind. If you're worried about it then the extra $ is cheap insurance.
