Under PM the Tigers have had a great winning streak, a few long dry spells where wins were hard to come by, but only really one solidly consistent season- the 2009 NC year. Even this year is like a tale of 2 directions. Why is it that it seems all or nothing so often?

LSU lost home series to Illinois and Tennessee that year.

it's because he comes from a crappy university, that doesn't play anybody and now he has to coach and he is lost

At this point it appears that way. There are no more "buttons" to push.

A far cry from how inconsistent we have been this year. I think it mainly comes down to recruiting. PM put a lot of eggs in a few baskets that didn't pan out. Sometimes you take risk and it falls in your direction and sometimes it doesn't. I think BB recruiting is the most difficult b/c of the uncertainty of the draft and money. We are not the only program that have had up and down years the past few years. No one has been going to Omaha every year. A few streaks here in there. The game has changes a lot over the last 10 years. This is why Skip struggled at the end and Smoke could never figure out a good formula.

I agree with that. It's a real guessing game as to who will end up in school. But it's pretty much always been that way right? And Skip won 3 NCs in his last 6 years so I don't know if he struggled. We were going to Omaha most years. The advent of the SR changed things too.

Obviously.

I really don't think that is the problem. Everyone loses guys to the draft. We have good players. I think our biggest problems lie in the 2 assistant coaches. Sanchez was a GA prior to becoming hitting coach at LSU. LSU is not the place for a college coach to learn the ropes. Grewe was a career hitting coach before coming to LSU as a pitching coach. We need experienced, proven assistant coaches. Our players are not developing (see Ranaudo, Ott, Nola, Hanover, etc.).

Under Smoke, the program was not performing to the expectations. He still went to Omaha twice along with a few super regionals. Mainieri has established a new low for LSU baseball - not making it to Hoover.

i agree the assistants aren't proven winners, and pm has a buddy attachment to them, grewe's resume when he was a head coach was awful and javi played at notre dame under grewe's guidance
