Why does keeping Paul = keeping the team in Nola?

Not trying to flame Paul in another thread. Plenty of that already going on, by myself included. But I hear this from everyone, fans, media, etc. I don't understand how the viability of an NBA team in new orleans hinges on one player staying here (who doesn't even seem to want to be here)

Because if he leaves we probably won't break 10,000 fans at any home game not against the Lakers or Celtics and the franchise will have to move.

It depends on what they get back but they'll probably get back 4 quarters for a dollar like Utah and Denver got back. If a Devin Harris or Danillo Gallinari type is the best in return nobody will go to games unless the team starts winning at unprecedented levels.

you're probably right but that's just sad. just look at what the nuggets are doing!!!
our fans have been pretty pathetic this season even when we were winning.

Denver people are much more passionate about their basketball team than New Orleans people are. I love the Hornets and would support them no matter who they traded away (unlike some people after Thornton), but it's the sad truth: CP3 is the only reason many people go to Hornets games.

Our fans are bad but it's hard for any fanbase to be "all in" with a team when their foot has been going towards the door for 50% of the short time they've been here.

I don't know. When I go to a Hornets game, I don't GO to see Chris Paul specifically. I've never heard any of my friends say that's what they go for either.
Nevertheless, he is a fan favorite (and we traded off the other upcoming fan favorite).

Knicks overpayed unbelievably for melo and I think many people shared that view even before the new look nuggets took the floor.
We'd be lucky to get fair value imo for CP.
Denver also has a much stronger fanbase. They can take rebranding their team because the nugs were around a long time before melo. The hornets were in nola for 3 years prior to paul.

What do you consider fair value ? Cause the best combo of players that I would actually trade for CP3 is Eric Bledsoe, Aminu, Williams and a 1st rounder if I was the GM of the Clips, and DC, George, and a first rounder for CP3 if I was a GM of the Pacers.
Guys like Andrew Bynum, and Josh Smith I would not trade for CP3 anymore. Smith is close but I think I still wouldn't do it, If of course I was the GM of those teams.

Do the Hornets go .500 in the next two years with either of these two offers? I think no way.

.500 ? HELL NO. More like 32 wins TOPS.

Exactly.
CP may leave us and put the franchise in a bad situation, but trading him would guarantee this bad situation as well as bring it on a year sooner.
The best value we could get for CP will likely make us MUCH worse in the short term and probably not better in the long term.
If you think about it unless we can hit a grandslam through the draft within the next 2 years (won't happen most likely) CP is the key to the hornets in nola.

I do think Paul George has the potential to be on the level of say Rudy Gay. George has got a great looking jumpshot and top level athleticism.
You'd still have to hit a homerun in the draft though of course.

We need to do this anyway. With or without Paul. We need a young player, preferably at 2 guard, that's too good with too much potential to trade going forward.
And as much as I like Thornton, he isn't that player.

We don't have a first round pick this year.

The situation would so be much better if we had local ownership. The fact that we are a franchise in limbo helps to solidify your theory. I'm afraid we will be used as leverage by Stern in the upcoming labor dispute.

I am not a hornets fan because of paul nor do I attend game because of him.
I am a hornet fan. Will be either way. paul or no-paul
fact is, paul is not a very exciting all-star. he is a rock solid franchise player but he does not lure me into the arena like kobe, lebron, ect.

It not that we love paul so much, no one wants to see a team with not a single superstar. We wouldn't even have a star without Paul. We would be awful and no one wants to see awful.

Star power in NBA is associated with ticket sales. I think winning is associated with ticket sales. When the Hornets started 11-0, the city was still praying for a Saints repeat. The crowd would have come around if the winning would have continued. I was in favor of dealing Paul and West to rebuild with an improved front court while keeping Colison and Thornton. Monty took the team in a different direction. C'est la vie. NOLA cannot support the franchise and the NBA is messing it up. They should allow a city like Seattle the opportunity to buy the Hornets.

You're so transparent. So New Orleans can't support the team, but the city that won't vote to build a new arena they desperately need is so much better?
How 'bout no?
