Pops will not turkey hunt in the afternoon, says he has never had luck that time of day.
Anyone have any luck in the P.M.?
I have also heard that if you can get a turkey to look up in the rain, it will drown. I find that hard to believe. Is it true?

According to the guy in NRA magazine, evening turkey hunts are a good idea...

I don't turkey hunt though, so I might be full of shite. I do know this though, you can't kill em unless you're in the woods.

yeah it will happen I have a friend at cornell and on the rainy 4th of july the turkeys will look up at the fireworks and you can walk around and pick up turkeys with 20 in beards. They will be laying around like pork chop bones at a baptist picnic

Chip,
The deal with drowning turkeys is supposedly true, but not wild turkeys. I now live in the Carolinas, where turkey farming is huge. The farmers tell me that the ones raised in houses will look up in the rain, until it stops, or they drown. Never seen it, but that's what these guys say. As far as afternoon hunting, I love it, particularly as the season ages. Hens go to nest earlier in the day, and leave their Toms lonely. Opening day in SC was yesterday, I killed an afternoon bird at 4 pm.
I killed this one today at 5:10, you be the judge...

Cant answer the drowning question.

Afternoon hunting is okay. I dont care for it..

In areas where the turkeys roost in the same areas each day it can be very productive. I hunted Rios in OK a few years ago and the birds roosted in the same tree each day. Setting up near it was an easy way to pick off a turkey.

I've had success afternoon hunting Rios, Merriams, and Goulds because of limited roosting sites. I've never killed an Eastern or Osceola in the afternoon as they are a bit more difficult to pattern.

I agree, but, hunt when you can hunt, period.. If given the choice, I much prefer morning.. Afternoon often means 95 degrees, snakes more active, and my confidence level is lower..

I actually prefer afternoon hunts, killed a lot of birds from the 1-4pm range. The old man that taught me how to hunt turkey used to say "If you want to hear em gobble, hunt in the morning. If you want to kill em, hunt in the afternoon."

FWIW, I almost prefer to hear them gobble. Most of the afternoon kills happen with no gobbling at all. Just blind calling and the bird will check it out.

Some of the best hunting is from 11:00-2:00. This is when the hens have all left the gobbler to go sit on their nests. He's alone then and will come in much more willingly.

Most people dont like the PM because the birds aren't gibbling as much. You may not hear him, but he's coming. I'd set usually in a big field or where the birds congregated first in the morning

I've killed most of my turkeys after 12. Afternoons are very productive for me. Just less gobbling
