Matt Holliday is out indefinitely following an appendectomy.

And the hits just keep on coming for the Cardinals. Holliday will be evaluated after the surgery before the Cardinals determine how much time he'll miss. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that it usually takes 4-6 weeks before a player can begin "strenuous activity," but it's not clear if that's the sort of timetable we're looking at with Holliday. Jon Jay and Allen Craig will see the bulk of the playing time while Holliday is on the shelf.

Though it is April Fools Day.

It's different than a hamstring injury in my opinion.. It's a simple surgery and recovery and something that won't linger

Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said of Matt Holliday's appendectomy that doctors "got it early" and it's possible the outfielder could miss only "six or seven days."

A little update.
