What was the deal with Bill Frieder? Why did he suddenly leave for Arizona State right before the NCAA tournament?

I started looking up information about The Fab Five and Steve Fisher after the documentary. I saw where Michigan credited Fisher for winning the title, even though he only coached 6 games.

So why would Frieder leave such a talented team?

(I missed the first 15-20 minutes of The Fab Five, so my apologies if they went over this).

Schembechler fired him after he announced he was going to ASU.

I do not know if it's hyperbole or not, but apparently he was at the finale when Michigan played Seton Hall and tried to come through the gate and they tried to make him pay.

Why would he go to ASU though? Alum?

It's not like Arizona State is a basketball powerhouse.

I think he was actually a Michigan alum. Maybe a Michigan fan can fill us in on why he left.

He hated the cold weather, lived all his life in the Midwest and wanted to go out west. After he retired at asu he moved to san Diego and now is the broadcaster for his old friend fisher's aztecs
