After seeing the video meaujeaux posted trolling the causeway for specks I went out and bought some rod holders and some rat-l-traps. Going to go pull them in lake Robinson tomorrow and see if anything hits. Also read an article about dragging a soft plastic 3-4' behind a cork and trolling the same way. Seems like it should work. Any of you fish assassins do this before?

I would think there is too much grass to do in the marsh and quite shallow....but you never know it could work

We have done something similar in Hopedale, granted this was behind a kayak. Trolled some plastics under a cork about 2-3 feet. Some days it worked great, others not so much. Probably doesn't help ya much but good luck.

Figure I would give it a shot as I will have a 3yr old, the wife and possibly a 14 month old in the boat. So not much normal fishing going to take place

I've never done this, but let us know how it works. I don't see why it wouldn't catch at least a few.

Yeah if I can catch 5-10 it will be a success. The lake is pretty clean for the most part. Might even drag them in the main canal on the way there.

Hell I'd set them up as soon as I launched and see what happened.

OB says: More time hook in water, more fish on hook(or something along the lines).

I used to do it in Reggio/Delacroix. In the winter, it worked well in the pipelines. Sometimes, I used soft plastics on the jighead. Other times, I'd use Mirrolure 52M. Also, any time of the year, I would troll/drift right across small bays such as Lake Amadee. I picked up trout and flounder doing this. This was always with soft plastics on a jighead.

Someone mentioned grass. That IS a problem in some areas, and is a problem in Delacroix/Reggio now...thanks to siltation since Katrina in the pipelines, making them more shallow. They used to be an even 7' pretty much all the way. Some are now silted in to the point they aren't navigable. Also, with the diversion of freshwater introducing freshwater grasses all these years, the grass is a bigger problem than it was back then.

But yes...you can definitely troll anywhere there is enough water, and lack of grass/debris.

We fish Reggio area all the time trolling for specks... (more of a drift than a troll but we just bump plastics along the bottom and they hit it)... Most of the time we find they'll only hit when drifting/trolling and not when you stop and reel/retrieve.. You dont want to troll with the outboard b/c its so shallow they'll spook, troll with trolling motor or just drift. It is a lot of fun.

Exactly. NEVER anchor in Reggio...ever.
