I hope some of you are more current on PC hardware than I am, its been a while since I built my box or paid much attention to hardware.

I think I like the nvidia 560 Ti but I don't know if the rest of my antiquated PC will be a bottle neck on it. Here are my specs:

mobo
PK5C

CPU
Intel core 2 duo E6850 3Ghz

4 gigs of DDR2

OS
Windows 7 64

I run 2 10,000 rpm raptor drives and a 7200 rpm western digital HD.

I think my power supply is 1000w but I have not yanked it out to confirm, it is pretty close to that, maybe 900w.

Thanks for any input

I wouldn't get anything faster than a gtx 460. The 10k raptors are behind the latest 7200 drives usually. You need to get at least 3.6ghz out of that 6850 or upgrade to a quad really... Any newer video cards would be bottlenecked. What is the resolution that you game at?

I would dump the 10k raptors for a SSD boot and gaming drive and use your 7200 for data storage. It will make the machine run cooler and quieter and take less power.

This is a very good chart from Tom's hardware that breaks down video cards by performance per dollar.

I game at 1920 x1080. I know I need to ditch the raptors for a SSD, that is one of my next moves as well. These raptors are old, one has already died on me but WD is so good w/ the warranty I got a new one free.

Do you think going to a Quad would be the right move since my mobo supports them or should I just wait and throw money at a new mobo that supports the new stuff like Intel i3/i5/i7?

I guess like all things it comes down to how much cash I want to throw around lol

If you have a GTX560 Ti that is still a great card. It is listed on that chart in the $175-275 in a tie with Radeon HD 6870 for the $240 range.

Depending on how much you want to drop on a new card it might be better to get a second one of yours and put it in SLI.

I guess I should mention that the whole reason for this upgrade is to get a card that supports Direct x 11....

I considered matching cards in a cross fire config but this card only supports 10.1

I was just going to add the power supply issue, I overlooked it when getting mine, but it appears you are aware.

been there done that
That is why I went for the big daddy when I upgraded it. Nothing worse than having your new card make you pc shut down when you are gaming....

Ahh ok. Now I see you are looking at the 560 Ti. DUH I need to read slower.

The 560 Ti seems like the way to go unless you are an ATI guy.

I wouldn't purchase anything until the quad upgrade & SSD if I were you. Go for a SB (i7 2600K) when the mainboard fix comes out in a few months.

I'd also recommend ATi 6950 2GB as it is faster in every benchmark than the 560 Ti and can be had for 239 or 249 after rebate... It can also be unlocked to a 6970 via a bios flash.

Thanks for the advice, the SSD upgrade had been 1st on the list for me until I played the demo for Dragon Age 2 and started longing for Direct X 11. It still sounds like that will be the best bang for the buck.

my GTX470 chews through everything I have thrown at it so far. I play at 1920 by 1080 and I play everything at ultra settings.
