FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Jose Bautista's agreement with the Blue Jays is a "done deal."

The Jays are expected to announce the deal at a press conference early this evening. ESPN Deportes' Enrique Rojas reported Wednesday evening that the deal was for five years and $65 million, and Rosenthal concurs with those numbers. Toronto is clearly convinced that the Bautista who league the majors with 54 homers in 2010 is here to stay.

Almost as smart as that Vernon Wells contract.

It went from him requesting 10 mil in arbitration to 65. You'd think they'd learn about giving crazy contracts out after Wells and Rios.

Holy shite I retract that, Vernon Wells was pretty atrocious defensively.

I just checked out his UZR and he was pretty bad most of his career. It might be one of those Jacoby Ellsbury types, great speed but can't read a ball to save his life.

$13M a year for a 30 year old below average defender that has had 1 good offensive season

By the time he is 35, it will probably the worst contract in baseball

Just like Wells and Rios, they'll probably end up trading him. One big year, right? Hardly merits a reward of this kind.

It was amazing they were able to trade Wells... Rios they just flat out cut.

This deal actually makes Adrian Beltre's deal look like a bargain.

Eh.

I think the dude is a 40+ HR guy. That can get people to come to games up there.

looks like jose bautista will be the next player the blue jays trade for nothing to get rid of a huge contract.

I also think he's a 40+ homer guy for the forseeable future, but he needs to get his average up around .280 rather than .260

He's been playing since 2004 and got regular ABs from 2006-2010.
HRs in that span:
2006: 16 (400 AB)
2007: 15 (532 AB)
2008: 15 (370 AB)
2009: 13 (336 AB)
2010: 54 (569 AB)

His HR, OPS, and SLG all took a huge jump in 2010. Also, a career BA of .244.

I wouldn't bet the farm on that based off of only 1 year of production.

The thing is they could have just gave him the half way in their arbitration case and give him an extension during the season if he continued to play well. He doesn't really have a true position nor is he an exceptional fielder... though he does have a very strong arm.

Brady Anderson hit 50 homers one year... and then just fell of the face of the earth. I can understand paying for potential, but he's already 30 and isn't likely to get better. I think an extension of this magnitude was premature.
