I'm a big fan of Chinese war movies and was absolutely blown away by this one. It was amazingly well done, both as an epic and as a war strategy movie.

What are this boards opinions regarding this flick? Also, if anyone has recommendations for similar movies, I'd appreciate it.

I too love this genre.
Most threads I've seen around here people seem to really like it.
I personally don't have much of a desire to rewatch Red Cliff. Woo admitted he was trying to make this his masterpiece similar to how Kurasawa was with Ran. Funny because I have the same problem with both movies, is that they both scream EPIC MOVIE while watching them. Even though I really enjoy Ran (I think it's pretty overrated though), I think both of these movies tried too hard.

Red Cliff basically played the same hour long movie over and over four times except with different strategies and different characters. I got tired of the "What strategy should we use to outsmart them because we are undermanned" story. And it was very too Lord of the Ringish with the characters and their friendships. Maybe that isnt the case with others who watched it but I just couldn't stop thinking that throughout is why I say it. Also the sword literally cutting the screen away for a scene change was a little corny to me for such an epic.

Those are my complaints. Other than that I enjoyed the movie(s) pretty good. Good acting all around, especially from my boy from The House of Flying Daggers.

The Curse of the Golden Flower is another movie you could check out. Not as widely known as Hero, Crouching Tiger etc. But a good watch. Also I have IP Man in my instant Q. It got good reviews and looks pretty good. Not necisarrily the same genre though. Has a sequel coming out soon.

I am a huge fan of the novel that the movie takes the battle from(the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong) and was pleasantly surprised at how well executed this movie was.

The novel is very good for people into Chinese War. It is a romanticized history of China from the years 184-264 AD. The Battle of Chi Bi(or Red Cliff) took place in 208 IIRC and is one of the biggest plot points in the book.

Those unfamiliar with the book may have heard of the battle of Chi Bi through such video games as Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Dynasty Warriors, Kessen 2, etc.

Different genre but you're gonna love that one. Vintage arse-kickin Kung Fu awesomeness.

Yeah, I used to play Dynasty Warriors years back. When I found out it was based on real history--or at least a romanticized version of it--I enjoyed reading some stuff online about it. When I found out they made a movie adaptation of Chi Bi I was pumped and it didn't disappoint.

Whoa. Is that possible? Kind if set the tone for all the others movies to follow.

Sweet. Dont know why I keep passing over it in my Q. I'm just trying to finish LOST. Almost done, but god that has been a struggle. It's like dating a girl when you should have broke up with her a long time ago. But you keep it going because after the new year she will get you something nice with her tax return. Except LOST doesn't buy me anything.

Yeah, I really can't explain why. That movie just missed for me even though I typically love the genre. I think it crossed a little over my threshold for a little too much fantasy/mystical stuff.

As you know, I love House of Flying Daggers--that's kinda the perfect balance. Crouching Tiger was just too far to the point it made me disinterested.
