Is Having a Beard Acceptable in a Professional Environment?

There seems to be this unwritten rule for white collar jobs (especially when you have external clients that you work with) that having a beard is unprofessional, ESPECIALLY if you are young. What is the deal with this norm? I grow a pretty decent beard, and I keep it up and it looks good. I don't see where all the grief comes from.

I now work at a place where it seems more laid back. I have a beard now, but I feel like I get dirty looks sometimes.

Anyone know why the hate?

As long as it's neatly trimmed, I don't see what the big deal is.

Most (if not all) larger agencies forbid it. I've seen alot of small town ones that apparently don't mind.

I have a beard and I work in a professional environment.

But we are also all geologists, scientists, or engineers, so...

It seems like the very specialized and hard-to-replace employees get away with things like this for obvious reasons.

Guys wearing beards shouldn't be looked at with any more disdain than some of the dumbass haircuts/styles women rotate in the workplace.

I've been wearing one the last 3 months (first time ever) and my boss hasn't said anything. We're a mix of business/business casual depending on the client.

If it is thick and trim. Mine is splotchy so even trimmed it would not look appropriate.

I have a beard and I work in healthcare. I've never noticed any malice toward the furry individuals such as myself. After deer season I'll probably shave it off. Atleast to a goatee.

Most of it comes from people who cannot for whatever reason grow any decent looking facial hair and end up with that splotchy inbred looking stuff.

I wear a beard every winter for about 4 months. I usually get a couple of comments on day 2/3, but that is it. I still shave at least every other day on the neck and top of cheeks to keep it neat.

I grew out my beard for 6 months last year, and the only comment I got from my boss was how impressive it was, and a few Grizzly Adam jokes.

But we don't really need to look handsome for the dirt, so nobody cares.
