Illegal participation

I had always thought the penalty was 15 yards as LSU was penalized. In the North Carolina-Tennessee game, NC only received a 5 yard penalty. What was the difference?

5 yards if caught before the snap, 15 if after.

The ref's didn't call ill. participation in that game - they flagged UNC for ill. substitution (I think).
That was Dooley's contention - it should've been the 15 yard ill. participation.

Huh? You could have 80 players on the field before the snap, as long as they are off before the snap.
Besides, they did get the snap off. QB spiked the ball - that's how they stopped the clock.

Illegal "participation" is more than 11 players lining up and "participating" in the play, 15 yards.
Illegal substitution is guys not getting off the field in time. These players have not intention of "participating" in the play, they just don't get off the field fast enough. This can also be 12 or more in the huddle on offense.

Ok, then follow this. If North Carolina was going back and forth between field goal team or snapping, what happened to "allowing defense to make a proper adjustment"?

wait so basically Tennessee did get screwed
How so?
The ball was snapped - and they had 13 men on the field. Penalty.

Wait, THAT might have been what Dooley was pissed about.
Either way - I think UT got the shaft on that sequence of events.

RummelTiger, are you referring to the LSU-Tennessee game? If so, please re-read the OP.
Posted on 1/9/11 at 9:45 am to craignettles
Only Les Miles has a specific defense for the want of "clocking" the ball, so allowing the Tenn. defense time to desire to adjust is unnecessary.

Rummel knew what the OP was talking about, but he didn't know what msutiger was talking about.

Um...
Maybe you need to re-read?
Also, please see the "(Posted on 1/9/11 at 9:33 a.m. to msutiger)".

YEP. AND he was exactly right. That is also what the head of the SEC refs stated. Either Time expired or the D has to be allowed to substitute. Since the players were not even coming off of the field I say they were planning to participate in the play. How the F does the ref know the diff between the "clocking' of the ball or them faking it and the ball slipping out of his hand. Can't say that with definity. Therefore, the 15 yard penalty would apply.

"planning to participate" is not the same a "participating" Using that logic, the QB was "planning to clock the ball". Hence, the ref's got it right.
BTW, the ball "slipping" out of the qb's hands would be a "fumble".

true, but sometimes it is hard to see when there is so much confusion and the refs are so far away from the QB. I get what you are saying...
Don't know if he wanted to fake throwing it down and pick it up and pass it to one of the 15 people on the field... see what I mean. We don't know because the refs cannot read his mind.
