Not sure about that one but make sure it can be updated with newer maps and such when you buy one.

Yeah one of the problems with me buying one is that I know very little about them. I just need something to mark new areas that I am scouting for next year that are hard to get to right now.

I have that model. Had it for prob 8 years or so now. It can be updated with new maps, and you can download your waypoints. It does fine in pointing you to a coordinate, but the pre-installed maps are pretty bare. Not very good topography detail on them so you will probably want to get the map disc to install with it and those can be pricey.

Overall a good unit, I have been happy with mine but I would consider the next step up (Etrex Vista I think)

Is this the one you are talking about?

Where can I get the map disc from?

The one I was thinking about was green, but its been a while since i looked at them. I remember it had the color screen and more detail on the maps.

The Map CD's should be available from anywhere that sells the GPS for the most part. I know Cabelas and Bass Pro have them in their catalogs

read the reviews on that gps on rei, says you can't increase the memory and there isn't that much so you can't hold many topos. It doesn't seem to be nearly as good as the etrex.

I have been looking recently myself so I have been learning.

Which etrex are you referring to?

Yeah I have actually been looking since before Christmas and finding a good one for a good price without knowing much about them has been a challenge.

Make sure you get one with expandable memory, i.e. uses a memory card (Garmins use a microSD).

You can buy the road maps for about $100. I never had any luck finding "free" garmin maps online. However, you can also download free "public domain" road maps for it. I can get you the website to do that, but I don't have it here at work.

Personally, if you like that style of GPS, I would recommend the LegendHCx Or the Vista HCx as a minimum.

Whoops, the venture HC by Garmin. Looking a little closer they are similar in many ways. Venture has a color screen.

I have no choice but to spend about 250 or so. I need one that has an altimeter so I don't have to buy a seperate piece of equipment and have to pack more stuff.

Thanks, I will check these out. I just need it to mark way points on the land that I hunt so that I can scout areas that I find on google earth.

If that is all you probably don't have a reason to spend a 100 more.
