Isn't it more offensive to these black assistant coaches to know they are getting a token interview. Just doesn't seem like this needs to still be in the NFL. The NFL has had lots of good black head coaches, these guys are getting hired based on their merit not the color anymore.

I'm not so sure Raheem Morris and Mike Tomlin become coaches if it wasn't for the Rooney Rule.

Tomlin and Morris were assistants with the teams that hired them! They didn't get hired because of an interview. They had already been with the team for years.

anyone else think that if black coaches were so offended by the rule they'd have voiced that displeasure and gotten the rule removed?

It's a tough thing because you would hope NFL owners would be open-minded enough by now to interview/hire minority coaches on their own without the rule. And I'm sure for SOME coaches it can be embarrassing to be the "token" interview and knowing you're the token interview. I think the rule has good intentions, but I'm not sure it's necessary anymore, though I could certainly be wrong.

This is true....actually the Steelers had planned on giving the job to the current Cardinals coach...they interviewed Tomlin and were blown away...going into it, they didn't plan on hiring him. Actually, Tomlin wanted Wisenhunt to stay as OC but he went all Hillary Clinton(crying "it was supposed to be my turn...)and took his talents to the Cardinals where they played each other in the Super Bowl and the rest is history.....

It should be offensive to African Americans that some people still think they need every advantage given to them. The Rooney Rule by definition gives African Americans a "head start" over any other ethniticty (sp). You don't give a "head start" to someone who you think is on even footing. Its pathetic, because I have plenty of African American friends that are smarter/faster/better than me. To even promote the idea they need an advantage is bullshite and offensive.

You think the "rooney rule" is really a head start/advantage for african americans in the hiring of NFL head coaches?

Yea, because Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith met in the Super Bowl and they were not hired because of the Rooney Rule.
Mike Tomlin was a Rooney Rule hire of course because of the owner but he won a Super Bowl.

I think it needs to be tweaked because it shouldn't be mandatory when there is a clear frontrunner.

if there were to be more than 1/4 black coaches in the NFL that would mean that a disproportionately HIGH percentage of blacks were being hired...don't forget they don't have an even split of the actual population. people always seem to forget this!

Some requiring a black guy interview candidate gives the black guy a clear headstart/advantage? How so?

I agree with this, particularly if you have an interim HC who coaches, say, 4 or more games that year. I think that in those cases, the requirement should be waived.
