Truly a great show from long ago.

Hosted by John Charles Daly.

The panel form 1954-56 was the best:
Fred Allen dead in 1956
Bennett Cerf 1971
Arlene Francis stayed with the show until the end.
Dorothy Kilgallen 1965

One of the best spots ever:

Bennett Cerf was married to Phyllis Fraser Wagner who was Ginger Rogers first cousin. Cerf is why we get to read James Joyce as it was written having won a case at the USSC.

Dorothy Kilgallen is the person that wrote that Doc. Sam Sherpard was not guilty, and exposed the Judge in the trial, also said she could break the JFK case. She also broke the story about the CIA trying to kill Castro.

Arlene Francis was a talented host of Blind Date durning World War II. She moved to hosting the same show on TV 1949-52. She played a prostitute in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932).

Fred Allen was the comedian of the show and after his death many people tried hard to fill the one spot including Steve Allen, Groucho Marx, Johnny Carson (before the tonight show).
Allen and Jack's running feud is all but forgotten today, but was funny as hexx in the day.

Marx' in Allen place:

Ed Sullivan on What's My Line:

Ernie Kovacs as Allen's replacement:

hehe His wife is the contestant.

There are 100's of these on youtube and all worth watching.

The best job fooling the panel is this one:

Well worth the time to look at these classics of tv long ago.

Wow -- I never thought I'd see a What's My Line thread on here (I've considered starting one myself, but didn't think anyone else would be interested).

IMHO, this is the greatest What's My Line moment -- for that matter, one of the greatest adlibs in TV history:

Henry Kaiser questioned by Ernie Kovacs

FF to 4:35

To get the joke, all you need to know is that Henry Kaiser was a rich industrialist who manufactured a popular automobile called The Kaiser, after himself.

Dozens of great stars appeared on the show: John Wayne, Bob Hope, Robert Mitchum, Ronald Reagan, Montgomery Clift (making a very rare TV appearance), Alfred Hitchcock, Walt Disney... A real TV treasure chest.

Ernie Kovacs was one of the greatest comedians ever - I actually can recall seeing the Henry J. Kaiser episode of What's My Line live. Almost fell out of my chair.

Some of his comedy sketches were classics.

Wife and I were watching It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World last night. Ernie Kovacs' widow, Edie Adams, was her usual hotness in that movie.

One of my favorite Kovacs moments is this short spoof of the game show I've Got A Secret. The intro of the panel is absolute genius -- it's amazing how much he anticipates Monty Python.

But Ernie's finest hour was probably his "Eugene" TV special. It was shot entirely silent, with classic sight gags and great pantomime from Ernie himself:
