Success during Great Depression or other downturns

I was wanting to read up on some success stories of persons, companies or industries that succeeded greatly during the Great Depression or during other times of economic hardship.
Doesn't have to be in the US, necessarily, but any stories where someone or something grew in spite of wholesale market downturns.
Can anyone suggest a book or two? Or at least a person/company/industry that I could look into.
