I'm pretty sure the montage music was already on the OST. I know because I had it on tape and played it to death when I was a kid

yea there was a training montage on the original OST, however it wasnt what was in the movie. Same with the fight sequence at the end. It was changed from the movie to the OST

this new release is exactly what was in the movie, with extra scoring that wasnt included

True or False:

Ivan Drago is one of the most sympathetic "bad guys" in modern movie history.

I say true. I actually felt bad for him through out the movie.

he was a product of:

1. roids
2. his bitch arse wife
3. a regime that wanted to win at all cost and dominate every sport

He was basically a robot

I say false.

The man showed absolutely zero emotion or remorse when he killed Apollo.

"If he dies, he dies."

It wasn't his fault Apollo died. He was simply competing. Rocky should have thrown the towel in. He was under the heavy hand of the Soviet ministry. Had he expressed any remorse, they would have probably killed his family.

At the end of the movie when he is shouting to the crowd "I fight for me," really sent the message home I think. He was not allowed to even compete for himself or make his own decisions because of the Soviet government.

Nobody's looking for overt expressions of remorse. Any hint in his eyes or body language to show he was human. A sympathetic figure would've found a way to communicate subtly some effect after having a human supposedly unintentionally die by his hand. I found him to be totally unsympathetic. Apollo in Rocky 2 was far more sympathetic a villain.

Thats just it - he wasn't "human." He was a machine created under the heavy oppression of the Soviet government. His personal will had been stomped out of him.

And that makes him a sympathetic character.

But he was already past that emotional threshold through no fault of his own.

On what grounds is Apollo sympathetic?

He was a great athlete who underestimated Balboa in the first film and was simply beat in the second. He had no true hardships in any of the films (with the exception of IV). There was nothing outside of his control that affected his ability to perform.

Sure, he was probably the most likable "villain" because of his personality, but likable doesn't equal sympathetic.

I think the scene where he's reading the hate mail and later talking about how people are insulting his kids at school, etc.

Also when he says "I won but I didn't beat him." It was a glimpse into a vulnerable man's psyche who was having his worth questioned by others and doubting himself for the first time in his life. I found that very sympathetic.

Okay, but this pails in comparison to a world class athlete having his entire career taken from him by his government.

Okay, but again, that pales in comparison to Drago's struggle.

Every athlete goes through self-doubt, not many athletes in the Western World are stripped of all free will in regards to competition.

But you forgive Balboa for not throwing in the towel?

Or the referee for allowing it to continue when Apollo couldn't lift his arms?

"You don't stop this fight. No matter what . . .no matter what."

Probably one of my favorite lines in all the Rocky movies.

As a side note, I always laugh during that fight when the announcers talk about how big the Russian and Carl Weathers is about an inch shorter, 30 lbs heavier, and jacked up.
