How to stop the Spread Offense

The defensive end and cornerback on that side tackle the running back to that side whether the QB gives him the ball or not. The same holds true for the DE and cornerback on the other side. The two inside linebackers are responsible for any runs up the middle. The two safeties roll to the side of the fake or handoff to stop a throw in the flat or to that side.

I think that will stop the spread offense in its tracks. Everybody on the defense has an assignment. Play your position and make the plays. Period. LSU has the athletes to execute it and make it happen on defense.

and since there are more OL than DL, one of the OL gets to the second level and blocks 1 of the LBers.

theres 5 yards.

On the hand off, if the DE is blocked and the extra lineman get to the LBer and blocks him, there's another 5 yards.

IMO, the way to stop the spread is to confuse the OL's blocking assignments. Dont make it easy for the OL and QB to make a decision.

gotta gamble and play some man on the outside and blitz from the nickle and dime spots and have a safety come up to fill.

Disguise it well enough and i think youll have the advantage.

This, except you don't just tackle them. You hit them hard everytime. By the end of the game they're more worried about the inevitable hit than what to do if/when they get the ball.
