Sitting in the stand out walks 6 thunderchickens. Looking at them got me to thinking (be careful 102362) why doesn't Louisiana have a fall turkey season. Is it because the population isn't as great as in Mississippi? What say you the outdoor board?

It's either the population, or we just make it "better" by having a shorter season.

Very few states have a fall turkey season, those that do usually have it seperate from deer season and require the use of shotguns/archery only and a few dont even allow hens to be harvested.

The reason there is no Fall turkey season in most states is because given opportunity to shoot turkeys with high powered rifles the population would be wiped out in no time.

We have a season here in FL, its very short and you can only harvest gobblers. Rifles are legal, and for that reason I do not go. Its just too damn dangerous..

Mississippi has a fall season only for certain counties along the river and certain other areas of the state. In those counties it is either sex, I think. The spring season is mature gobblers only, no jakes or hens. Damn birds are everywhere on my lease in NW Leake County. I watched 15 of them, eating my grass, in front of my shooting house sunday morning for a hour. Deer hunting see turkey and turkey hunting see deer, life is never fair.

Louisiana had it's first fall turkey season this year. Draw hunt only on Pearson Ridge WMA. To my knowledge the first fall turkey was legally killed here, and one of my hunting partners killed him. It was a great time, hope they do it again and consider expanding the opportunity.
