On the Fake punt the new guy(white dude starts with A) on special teams was lined up as a backer right at the line staring at the punter. As soon as the ball was hiked he sprinted over to help with the gunners and left the middle wide open. I can't believe he was told to leave without seeing the punter kick. Perhaps they saw it in film. Until Sunday with all of the injuries and new players I thought the ST had been holding there own. He wasn't the only coach on the saints sideline that got his arse out coached.

The blocking in the return game could definitely be better, but I did not see any fireable offense Sunday.

I'm sure it has happened at some time, but I cannot remember EVER seeing a punter keep the ball and run on a fake punt in the NFL. Typically on a fake the punter will get it and pass or most likely it will get snapped to the up man who will run it.

Then there was the trick return which the browns executed perfectly and caught us off guard because why would you expect that Cribbs, one of the best return men in the league, would ever not return it himself. In any case, ST coaches do not get fired simply because the other team runs one back.

Other than those two plays there was nothing to speak of on special teams. Sure you want more than an average performance, but it was not awful.

Our ST was questionable at times last year as well. our return game is non-existant. I think this guy is gone in the offseason.

I know, it is an outrage that we are not routinely preparing for the punter to run it on 4th and 8 from his own 23.

On the fake it was a directional kick to the left, and the gunner on the right ran to the middle of the field to tackle the return man because that was his job. If the kick was to the middle of the field then the return wouldn't have worked.

You guys really think someone needs to get fired over these two plays?

I admitted in my first post that the Saints return game needs work, but that does not seem to be what everyone is outraged about, nor do I see how firing the coach mid-season will help the return game.

The most insane thing about Sunday is that the Browns defensive changes confused Brees all day, they lateraled on a kickoff for 70 yards, and the Saints gave up the longest fake punt run since the merger in 1970.

Yet for all that, if Brees doesn't throw the two pick sixes NO wins 17-16

The best possible thing to do is to over react and make someone a scapegoat, all in one action.

Clearly.

Each of those two ST gaffs can be corrected in about 3 minutes,,,,,,,,,,,,,total.

Fixes on the offensive side of the ball will take considerably more time. I think our head coach's time is better spent on this.

I think we should make a change at the end of the season, but not because of those 2 plays

our coverage units have been among the worst in the league, we have to bring in carney to be our kicker's life coach, return units our elementary, etc. etc....

this is one reason I think we need to go in another direction

this is the other

Not to mention our kick returns have been very less than special, its like we just concede that we aren't going to put ourselves in good field position
