2008
Florida- 9th in Total Defense, 4th in Scoring Defense

2007
LSU- 3rd in Total Defense, 17th in Scoring Defense

2006
Florida- 6th in Total Defense, 8th in Scoring Defense

2005
Texas- 10th in Total Defense, 8th in Scoring Defense

2004
USC- 6th in Total Defense, 3rd in Scoring Defense

2003
LSU- 1st in Total Defense, 1st in Scoring Defense

2002
Ohio State- 23rd in Total Defense, 2nd in Scoring Defense

2001
Miami- 6th in Total Defense, 1st in Scoring Defense

2000

The last ten BCS Champions have an averaged ranking of 7.4 nationally in Total Defense and 5.3 in Scoring Defense.

Now, how do those rankings compare to offensive rankings of said teams? Were the offenses in top 15 too or did the defenses carry it completely?

Will be interesting to see the trends.

My apologies, it's almost impossible to keep up with the various topics on the Rant these days. Also, you are correct, not sure why I jotted down those numbers. Thanks.

You found 2002 stats for LSU's 2003 defense. LSU was 1/1 in 2003.

I didn't run a statistical analysis but just eyeballing it, it would certainly support the commonly-held view that Defense Wins Championships. Thanks for sharing the numbers.

Eliminate the anamoly on each side and the avg is well within the top 10.

It takes a top 10 D to win it all, even the anamolies are balanced by the total/scoring rank.

How does the BCS top 10 rank defensively ?

When relying on a strong D to win games, its absolutely CRITICAL the offense doesnt make mistakes becuase it may not be able to come from behind to recover for them.

Thats why we almost lost a few games, and this is probably why Miles doesnt want to throw the ball much.
