And if so, best way to prepare. Also, is it true that if you land on gafftop, that specks are close by?

TIA

We never keep them. I've never noticed anything special in regards to the specks/gaffy question either

Yes...the trick is when u catch them...cut the tail and let it bleed...when u skin them the meat is pure white ...then fry them just like fresh water cats.....

I have kept them but it makes you ice chest look like an elephant jacked off in it. They eat ok and I like them fried better than baked but they are most definitely edible. There was also a rumor floating around that their slime would get you high. My all time largest was 7 lbs 15 oz
I have one quite a few rodeos with the nasty bastards and they are my go to fish for a 1st place finish

I caught a big gafftop Friday. Had never eaten one but it was decent. Definitely not as good as trout, redfish or drum. But they are definitely eatable.

I always keep them to eat. Best thing to do is when you fillet them keep up off of the skin by a 1/8-1/4 inch or maybe a bit more depending on size. They have a thick blood line similar to a large redfish. Once you have the fillet you can then cut the remainder of the blood off. I typically end up cutting the fillet into two long strips while removing the blood that is thickets in the center.

I saw someone mention that they bleed them after the catch and that would be a good idea.

I asked this a few weeks ago and followed bayoudude's advice. They are better eating than fresh water catfish.

I think so too. You don't get that muddy taste. Might not be as good as trout but better than a freshwater cat any day.

Never have eaten em, never plan too. But when they start hitting the trout have usually moved on, especially soft palstics, don't know about soaking meat.

I have heard to soak them in ice cold water, but don't think I could get past the slime. I just toss them back.

Yes I have kept them. especially if I'm out of fish.

I bleed them and if any blood is left will cut out the bloodlines.

They are quite tasty. People will tease you about them but frick em. Sheepshead are even better.

Be dam if they're better than spotted cat pulled out of the river and they sure don't taste the mud.

if you've eaten thin fried catfish at Mandina's you've probably eaten gafftop.

I keep those slimy bastards. You can catch them under the birds, along with trout.

The really big ones hang in deep passes with lots of current.

To the poster that said fresh water cat tastes better, all fresh water fish taste muddy to me. Growing up eating salt water fish I really don't care much for anything freshwater. They all taste a little muddy IMO.
