Had to put my lab down last week. Got bit on neck by Brown Recluse, sought treatment, but a few days later his condition worsened...eventually shut down his organs.
Anyone else ever had this happen to one of their dogs?

Damn fine dog, some of you may have his offspring...R.I.P. GHRCH Dust Devil's Joltin' Joe GMH QAA

I heard this story while at the South Mississippi hunt test this past weekend. I have no words except that I am so sorry. I know it will not cure the pain but I want to pass word along that I watched two of his offspring pass there seasoned test. After watching these two dogs I can tell you that "JOLT" will not soon be forgotten. Again sorry for your loss.

Whenever you hear about this or about people getting taken down, it always makes me wonder why this doesn't happen a shitload more than it does. Are brown recluses just pretty rare?

Choirboy, You run a dog? Pass?

And yeah i got some pics from the weekend from one of the two Jolt pups running. Both dogs look like yellow versions of him.

In a few yrs, I will use one of his straws to produce a litter and pick a male out of it. We have two female progeny at home, and they are both awesome dogs.

I got bit by one and it made my entire left thigh turn purple/red/black/nasty looking. The Dr. told me that that was the venom I was seeing, not bruising.
He told me that almost all spider bite deaths are in little children and smaller animals. Terrible that this just happened to bite his dog in the neck. I would imagine that if it was on his back or something, the dog could have handled it.

@Mugatu

I ran my young black female in the same flight as the Jolt pups. She has completed the seasoned ranks and the plan is hunt her this duck season before picking up some finished hunts in the Spring. I met and talked to the vet that has one of your pups and he seemed like a stand up guy. I have a feeling he will make you proud.

my dog got hit by a car and had to eventually take his hind leg, but while recovering he got bit by one. he has a huge 8"x2" scar on his side now. it killed all the skin in that area, and the hair wont grow back there. since he was under vet care almost every day we got him treatment in time. it almost was the final straw for him, but somehow pulled through. sorry for your loss

My deepest sympathies man. It's not any easy thing to say goodbye to your best friend. I had a dachsund that got bit by a recluse on his front foot. The venom ate all the way to the bone. He luckily survived due to quick and aggressive treatment.

Not rare. They just like warm dark areas. They dont like to come out in the sun. Typically you get bit when sleeping or at night.

How do you verify it is a recluse bite did you see the spider or is there certain symptoms and visuals that prove it? My dogs always got bit by snakes, but never heard of this before.
