The most irritating play calls

I can remember at least three times in the WV game when, on third down, we run a pass play that is not long enough to get a first down! This has been going on for quite a while-not just WV. It is as if we always expect the receiver to get extra yards. I can't believe the receivers run bad routes that often so I have to believe Crowton is calling these routes.
What say you, Rant?

It's not that the play is designed to not get the first down. It's our qb that is choosing that route over deeper routes that would get a first down.

JJ checks down to those routes. Believe it or not but plays have certain route combinations that are designed to exploit certain defenses. Sometimes the short routes hold the linebackers up while the first down route comes open behind them. Our problem is our QB checks down to the short route as soon as he sees them open and doesn't allow our deeper routes to progress.

JJ checks down to those routes.

The unconfident QB will always throw underneath as opposed to trusting his arm with the deep routes.
It's a good philosophy to have when you're consistently completing high-efficiency passes and moving the chains one step at a time, but not on third and long.

GW12...does this mean JJ is making bad checks? The route not being designed right? Or that is just the way it is? I've seen Steve Young harp on this point a number of times...i.e. not running a route that will get a first down so I am curious why we seem to do it so often.

It mean JJ's is making the check way too soon. If he lets the deep route progress and its not open then he should hit the check down and hope we get run after the catch. Every team does this. Our QB has no confidence so for him just completing a pass is a victory.

I will actually give him this one, I'm not sure the receivers are aware of where the sticks are.

Its not that the play is designed to not get the first down. Its just that the coach isn't choosing to run a short side option.

sometimes I think it's the WRs adjusting to hot routes due to a blitz and he has to throw it. other times, as has been noted, he's checking down to the underneath route too early. Lee checked down too early on his completion (he had time to look deeper), and the announcers were on him about it.

well as i already mentioned, he doesn't always check off.

He'll check down from a deep route to a short route, but when his main WR is running a short route he is locked in.

Punts on 4th down. Just go for it like you would on a videogame.
