Anyone use one of these? My g/f's father owns one, not from this company, but has had his for almost 20 years, and loves it...

How would you rank one of these compared to cheaper charcoal pits from Lowes or Home Depot? (is it worth the price to get the longevity?)
and compared to a smaller versatile cooker like BGE's?

Really all depends on the quality. What you get at HD and Lowes is generally pure garbage and temp control is a nightmare on most of them. You really just have to look at the welding and how good a fit there is you dont want heat to leak out of there.

Also depends on what you want to do with it. If you like smoked or grilled chicken it doesnt really matter but if you want to do a 12+ hour smoke then you might want to do a lot more research on the exact pit.

I would like to be able to do all of the above

Edit: (taken from their website)

Since then we have manufactured high quality products ranging from cattle handling equipment to pressure vessels to BBQ grills. It is by making quality products and taking care of our customers that we have stayed in business for 50 years and with your continued support another 50 more. This is our shop, our BBQ smokers and BBQ grills, as well as every thing else we sell, is made here including the fire pits which we press ourselves. The shop has over 18,000 sq feet of fabricating space it also has the machinery to shear, roll, bend , weld, polish, press etc. we can roll a 1.25" thick by 12 feet long steel plate to form a cylinder for your BBQ q smokers. Nobody ever goes that thick but it can be done and regarding the diameter, any is good for us. This ability to take steel plate, not pipe, and turn it into any pit is one of the advantages that allows us to offer you great prices and still be able to ensure high quality.

Thanks for the link to the website, as now I can see what sort of prices I can get for the material to make one myself. Be nice to pull off, use a few times and then sell for a little extra cash.

Man!!!! That looks fantastic. I would kill for something like that. Smoker/Grills are my worst obsession. I had three but now down to two - Traeger and Webber. Got my Webber going now. I've always loved those types of units though.

I've got an air compressor tank sitting in the marsh (from hurricane Ike) out by my parents house I've had my eye on. Been thinking of pulling out of the marsh and cleaning it up..

I work for a company with a big fab shop, with some really good welders and fabricators.
