...that's why we don't use the wildcat.

-per Miles/Crowton per Gordy Rush (+Herbstreit?) this afternoon. Is this shite for real?

No, apparently Shep, Ware, RR, etc. just suck at the option.

The option is horrible. He never pitches it. My guess is that it's because he fears screwing up the pitch.

I think you mean: What offense has our coaches been watching?

My answer to that: I wish I fricking knew.

I think JJ is a decent QB, but he's not an option QB

he's actually wrong a lot

He pitched it Saturday ... he was about 2 feet from Shepard and RS fumbled it, but picked it up immediately. JJ has no concept of spacing for the option.

The lead option is so simple though... I don't understand how he can be so bad at it. I mean you could probably fine 10,000 high school quarterbacks that can run the option better than JJ.

he said that JJ did a good job as the Wildcat QB, which is a benefit because they don't have to spend practice time working with another QB. Shep is the motion man or the running back in the Wildcat

The option is a different animal...

he looked good on the zone read (read option)...the traditional option is where he has problems, but the play is used as a safe play when checking out of a play that looks like it might be defended.

Most of the time, JJ fricks up the option because he doesn't run parallel to the line of scrimmage. He arcs backwards away from the defensive end and into the zone where the pitch man should be. He needs to run straight at the DE and force him to choose. The way JJ runs the play, the DE approaches into the backfield and buys more time for the cornerback to assist with the tackle. The angle created for the DE when JJ backslides away from the line, allows for the DE to be in position to make the tackle on either the QB or the Tailback.

This. That's why they call the DE (or whoever the play is designed to attack) the "force". I just can't figure out which it is, or which is worse: JJ is being coached on how to do this, and just can't do it, or they aren't coaching him on how to do it.

These quotes are coming from the Herbstreit comments during the broadcast.

He asked Miles about the Wildcat, and Miles told him they were satisfied with JJ's decision making and running with the ball.

Just another sure indication that Miles lies, talks in riddles, or is absolutely clueless.

Take your pick.

JJ did mess up the zone read one time where the DE took the dive, and he handed off.

I find it noteworthy that in the most crucial exchange of the night up to that point, our last play, we call for a pitch to the back instead of a handoff.

Ball security along with many other things just doesn't take top priority.

We have a "want and desire" to have ball security and run effectively.

Actually, I agree with you on JJ not running the option well. However, the QB 's job is to option off the "buzz" aka strong safety and not the defensive end. In the old days, you had a fb diving and would option off the defensive end. The "Buzz" job is to slow play the QB and allow the LB enough time to play the QB. The "Buzz" kind of half plays the Qb and RB. I hate the speed option by the way.

I thought that was already clear amongst those of us who know what we're talking about.

I really don't care to discuss JJ and the option in the same sentence, much less gameplan.
