A few thoughts:

1. The play calling was not as bad as I thought it was while watching live. Execution was an issue, however.

2. Shepherd had a big gain if he doesn't fall down on the handoff in the 3rd qtr.

3. The deep ball to Tolliver was a good decision just slightly overthrown.

4. Ridley's fumble on the 1st drive of the 3rd quarter changed the shape of the game.

5. Tolliver cut his route short on that 3rd and 6 to avoid contact.

6. The aggressive style of defense (that we all say we want) cost us twice when a young DB got beat with double-moves, but overall made enough plays to eek out a win.

7. The OL wiffed on a LOT of blocks.

8. Jefferson continues to have issues working thru progressions.

Hopefully things will improve over the next few weeks.

On #6,
I like aggressiveness (i.e. corner/safety blitzes), but in order to pull them off, you have to have tight coverage. Why, then, would you blitz the best cover corner in the nation to let Mo Claiborne drop into coverage? Peterson may be the fastest dude on defense, but on blitzes, it just means he's the first one blocked.

9. T-bob is an ahole. His penalty totally screwed us.

I disagree. I think the playcalling is still pretty bad, but improved execution makes it look a little better. I'm tired of the option and handing off to Ridley out of the shotgun. Run it up the middle for goodness sakes. And yeah, I know he fumbled.

The defensive philosophy is completely different compared to last year. Lots of blitzing, especially with the DBs. I kind of like it; the best one was Tyran's blitz on 4th and 5.

1. Agree that execution was a problem, but I think the repeated efforts to run the read option play in the 2nd half were suspect.

2. Yes. Got a little ahead of his feet. It could have been huge. So why not go back to him??

3. No problem with the decision to throw deep. However, the throw was late (just like his TD pass to RR was a little late; RR beat his guy so badly it didn't matter though).

4. yes

5. hmmm. didn't see that.

6. true, but the corners should have had some deep help. Don't know why Taylor came forward on that 97 yd TD. I guess he thought Yates was gonna run.

7. Indeed. Especially on the right side.

8. yep. Just not going through the reads quickly enough. If he can't run through his reads more quickly, then I'd rather him make one read. If the guy is not open then RUN. But upfield, not backward.

I share your hopes. I'm not terribly optimistic that the QB play will significantly improve (JL would be worse, IMO), but I hope I'm wrong. I think this is what we are gonna get this year. However, the fumbles should be fixed next week. Hopefully, the penalties too. And maybe they won't forget about Shep in the second half next week.

Yeah, I was just apathetic towards him before, but I'm pretty sure now I really dislike T-bob as a person.

I'm concerned about our defense showing a tendency to wear down in the fourth qtr.

What makes you think anything will improve. They did not improve one iota from game one to the bowl game all last year.

The 3 man line at the end of the game while in the prevent defense, did not work. The QB just sat in the pocket and threw underneath the coverage. This win exposed some major problems which will be corrected. Some of the young players made rookie mistakes and Brandon Taylor needs to understand the safety position a little better. I was disappointed in not seeing Craig Loston in the game more when they were killing us with the underneath stuff.
