When rating movies, do you prefer a 5 star scale like Netflix or 10 stars like IMDB. Personally I think a 5 star scale is far to limiting.

A perfect example was Public Enemies which I watched last week. Not a great movie so it might be a 2-3 star on Netflix but a 4-6 star on IMDB, however I gave points for some good shootouts and excellent period sets. So I rated it a 5 on IMDB but a 3 seems high on Netflix and a 2 seems low.

The way I break my movies down is:

10 & 9 on imdb = 5 stars on netflix
8 on imdb = 4 stars on netflix
7 & 6 on imdb = 3 stars on netflix
5 & 4 on imdb = 2 stars on netflix
3,2 &1 on imdb = 1 star on netflix

The way I rate them

It's either worth my money or it isn't.

What if you didn't pay for the movie you're watching? You saw it at someones house, or you downloaded it?

I hate rating movies on a scale, and ranking and listing movies as well. Damn that was poetic.

Well I download everything

But same thing, I'd rate it on if I'd pay to watch it.

Stop throwing loop holes in my logic fool.

Rating I like because it helps me keep track of which movies I like best.

Ranking numerically I don't really care for at all but I do it for Freauxzen's threads because those threads can be fun and is the best way to expose people on the board here to movies they haven't seen.

Listing I don't mind for much the same reasons as it exposes people to movies they may not have heard of. Of course if anyone ever asks me I don't mind at all talking about any movie I list.

Naw it's cool there's sound logic in your reasoning. When it gets down to it you either like something or you don't and really isn't that all that matters in the end.

I use the Men on Film ranking:
Movie is good: 2 snaps
Movie is great: 2 snaps around the world
Movie sucks=HATED IT!

The fact that so many people rate movies with half stars shows that the 10 star system should be standard.

Yeah, I have a lot of movies on Netflix that I'd like to give tweener ratings to. The 5 star system is too restrictive.

Same reason I like the Farenheit scale better than Celsius.

Agreed.

First, I just base a recommendation for a movie on whether it entertained me or not. Next, I start thinking to myself about what I'd give it A-F. I'm a grade letter guy.

I like Dave White on movies.com. He use the A+ A A-, B+ B B-, etc. system. Has a wider range of grading than the others. And I normally agree with his opinion so that doesnt hurt. Neither the 5 or 10 star scale bother me.

I like the 10 for the same reasons you gave. Gives more of a scale

Nah it made sense. But I literally read the whole thread and stopped when you said "agreed". My bad.
