Just got back from the scrimmage and have a few notes on the Rayville duo... Griffin (DE/TE) from Rayville was hurt early on (knee) and didn't return that I could tell. Ruston's interior line handled Johnson (DT) pretty well and pretty much wore him out. Last year Johnson seemed unblockable, but not so much this year. Probably a combination of an older and much better Ruston OL and conditioning. After seeing Hunter (WMHS) and Johnson (Rayville), I have to know say Hunter looks much more refined and better overall

rayville doesn't play the big schools tough and usually outscore the teams that are smaller are in the same class as them.

How does Ruston look? There isn't much news coming out of Ruston.

I heard Barton on Fox and Co. today. He predicted that they will win it all. Dude has had as much talent as anybody in the area and hasn't done shite.

Ruston has one of its bigger and better OL units that I have seen. They will probably use this to run more than in recent history and play more ball control. Pierce Spangler (jr QB and son of La Tech DC Tommy Spangler) did a good job last night of hitting his targets and his consistency is the key. There were 3 freshmen that will play varsity this year that I can tell (2 RBs and a PK) which is unheard of at Ruston, but that group has never lost a game and has a lot of talent. On the defensive side, JP Dunbar has done as good of a job as DC over the last few years as anyone in the state and this year he has a secondary that will allow him to do alot of things with a young front 7 to help them out. This defensive unit is probably about a year away from being like the last 2 years units, but it would not suprise me if they step up sooner rather than later. They have very good coaching leadership

Don't worry about the freshman. If they're physically ready then the rest is all mental. We saw that last year with Diarse and we have another frosh WR this year that is already 6'-6'1, 200 lbs. When they realize they can play at that level then the talent will take over.

I hope yall are more consistent this year on offense. Yall don't seem to ever have any trouble on D.

Now that is about the funniest thing I have heard in a long time. I played for Coach Childress when J.P. Dunbar was a seconday coach fresh out of college and we won state and Ruston was in the finals every even year with lesser talent from 82, 84, 86, 88 and 90 (well, 1990 had a bunch of talent). Billy Laird will NEVER win a state championship. Not in 5A, not in 4A, they can drop down in classifications and still that man will not win it all. Bad as I hate to admit it, but Ruston High Football is a joke from what it used to be. It's about time they run that entire coaching staff off and get someone in there that can at least put some decent teams on the field. And the bad thing is, I like Billy Laird and his son Brad and daughter Kim but I'm calling a spade a spade.
