I don't know, but at that age, I was on the middle school track team. Put him up against the other 'kidz' in his school on the 100m dash, and you'll have a good relative gauge.

if he's running 5 at 13, that's pretty solid.

Not very nice to call him that, with him being young and all.
Any way, 5.2 sounds like he is right aboot average.

Been coaching jr high kids for 9 years, and we always clock them
5.2 is solid.
Typically our fastest times are around 4.9 or 5.0.
Sometimes we have faster kids, sometimes slower.
Fastest we've ever clocked at this age group was 4.75
Last year 4.9 was fastest, and he was alone at the top. Two other kids ran right below 5.1
This year we have more team speed than ever I can remember. We have 3 under 5.0, one of which hit a 4.85. We have 4 more kids who hit around 5.0-5.1, and a whole mess of kids around 5.2-5-4, which is still not blazing, but still good speed at this age

Just let your kid play because he likes sports. If he's any good you'll know because of gifts from agents, not his 8th grade 40 time.

Well he used the term "freak."
Your kid running a 5.2 Is good man.
For a little more perspective, we had a kid run a 4.78 in 8th grade years ago. His name was lyndrell mikell, and his senior year in high school he finished 4th in the 5A state track meet in the 100, and 5th in the 200.
He ran a legit 4.4 during football drills his senior year.
Those are the kids I would classify as "freak."
We got one this year who ran a 4.85 at 150 pounds and about 5'8". That dudes calfs are absolutely huge, and he looks like a stud athlete. That is the kind of kid I can foresee being bigger stronger and faster then everyone he plays against throughout high school and running 4.4 or 4.5 carrying some weight. Those are the freaks.
But denham high has a sophomore tailback this year who ran about a 5.2-5.3 when he played for me at about 145 pounds.
Then he hit his growth spurt and is built like a brick house at 185 right now and coaches clocked him at 4.6 this summer. Not bad for a 15 year old.
He hit a level of maturity later than the other kids in his age group, but he has really developed into an athlete
