Delaware Blue Hens to the Big East?

Lets revisit some conference expansion talk. Delaware just announced a renovation and expansion plan to their football stadium. The first phase of expansion would take them from 22k to 34k with the final plans sitting around 50k. Delaware would be at the top of the league in terms of academics boasting a strong reputation. Delaware enrollement sits around 22k and the school routinely sells out their home games. Delaware's new AD has been quoted as saying they are interested in moving up to D1 full time. Is that to the Big East? Would they be a good fit in the Big East? What do you think? Here are the plans.

But but but then Delaware State won't ever get to show they can beat them...

Ok guys, seriously, Delaware is saying that they are interested in making the move up to D1. The logical choice would be to the Big East. They are a very solid program, yes its 1aa, but they are making moves. They bring more then any of the schools mentioned about moving up to the Big East. I could eventually see this happening.

The Big East would make the most sense if they did move up. How long did the NCAA put a hold on teams moving up to Div 1?

Good idea in theory, but I think that the Big East football schools will have to break with the basketball schools for this to work OR Delaware would stay with the CAA in everything but football.

Thats what Delaware fans are saying, that a move to the Big East would be for football only until the Big East deals with their "basketball" problem. The Big East knows it needs to expand for image issues (8 teams in a BCS conference isnt enough) but they have 16 schools for basketball. I could see those schools forming their own basketball league and then the Big East could make some football moves....Delaware being one of them. From all the articles i have been reading, it sounds like Delaware is making its future plans...is the Big East?

exactly what I was thinking. No way the Big East can expand in basketball right now

I agree that the BE cant expand right now, but at some point the Big East is going to have to address this issue in order to expand in football. 8 schools in a BCS conference doesnt cut it and they know that. Football drives revenue.

Not sure what your question is here. Delaware already is a D1 school.

Delaware moving up to FBS from FCS is the question.

UConn made the transition in football, why don't Delaware, the only difference being UConn is really good in basketball.

I figured that. I just felt it was my a-hole-ish duty to point out that FCS is, in fact, Division I. But as long as we're talking about an FCS team moving up, what about James Madison? They announced expansion a year or so ago: LINK
