freshman to play year after year?
shite, some of the same people who wanted tons of freshman to play 3 years ago STILL want tons of freshman to play.
Do they not realize the logical paradox this presents? I mean, if two years ago, we failed to play freshman and they would've been the difference, and then 1 year ago, we failed to play freshman who would have made a difference, why would we need to play very many freshman this year?
Do all of our players get worse over time?

the ignorance of people wanting to play a bunch of freshman lies in the fact that it's a huge jump from high school ball to sec ball. if freshman were ready, they'd play, and they do when they are. patrick peterson started as a freshman. it happens, but lsu is not unlike any other school because freshman starters in the sec aren't just a dime a dozen, unless you're a school that has no choice.

Maybe if our upperclassmen would step the hell up and do something productive, we wouldn't be yelling for freshman to play. We have had freshamn step up in the past (definitely in the Saban years, but that is a whole different argument in itself), why can't they do it now?

No, but NFL scouts would argue that they aren't getting any better.

So just a quick question, which freshmen would have stepped the hell up over upperclassmen last year? Just give me examples where freshmen with no snaps would have done better than say Charles Scott or Brandon Lafell or Richard Dickson, or any guys who contributed when they were also young.

Russell Shepard in ALL cases.

quote:Yes or no, should R. Shepard have played more last year? Should he have at least touched the ball in the Capital One bowl? When a freak of nature freshman like him who absolutely could have helped a stagnant offense can't even see the field, then people get frustrated and brand Miles as someone who won't play freshman for meaningful snaps.

He would be the best TE!!!!!
I actually agree that he should have gotten more touches, but other than him I don't think we've had many underclassmen who truly deserved to get playing time that didn't. The whole Les doesn't play underclassmen argument is waaaay overblown. He is really not much different than other major D1 coaches.

People keep acting like Shep never played. The thing with Shep last year is that he was still learning how to catch and play wide receiver, a position he'd never played before. Yeah he made some great plays, but when you line him up in the backfield or at QB, the defense knows he is getting the ball. Now, I think we should have at least shown the pass with him so the defense couldn't over pursue like they did. but, that is an issue of play calling, not an issue of getting guys in the game. the only other freshman that deserved significant PT was randle, and he got his chance, but it's not like he's gonna play over lafell or tolliver. he's also another freshman receiver, so you can't have both he and shep bpth, as freshman, get a ton of touches with the other experienced receivers we had.

in 2008, we started 2 different freshmen at quarterback and a freshman at corner, pretty significant considering those are both skill positions

People watch HS highlight videos and tend to get very excited.

yeah pretty much. in all honesty, shep is a tough kid, but i don't know if he could have handled the pounding yet at his size last year to get as many touches as a lot of people in here were asking for.

Shep had ZERO touches in 2 of LSU's 4 losses. With what he did with the rest of his touches, that truly is unacceptable. Especially when you consider the entire 3 points scored against Florida.

that florida game was the worst called offensive game i've ever seen, so i'm not gonna even try to argue that game.

I remember a redshirt freshman QB named Tommy Hodson who beat the 7th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies 35-17 in his first start.

YES. The OCCASIONAL freshman can be an impact guy.
But again, if three years ago, you thought there were a bunch of potential freshman impact players, and then 2 years ago, and then 1 year ago......
Well, then quite obviously, there wouldn't be much need for freshman impact players now.
Unless of course you believe that the upper classman who was supposed to have great impact 3-4 years ago if only he had played somehow no longer is that guy.
