assuming that the sec does expand with aTm, what are your thoughts about adding kansas and/or missouri? is it possible? every article i read says that kansas will be left out and that the big ten isn't expanding beyond nebraska for another year or so. so, why not add these schools and expand the market?

Because of conference balance. The old SEC rivalries will be try to be left in tact by adding an eastern school to balance out. KU definitely won't get an SEC invite. If Missouri gets an invite, SEC is desperate.

hardly. SEC is looking to expand markets.. not 'conference strength'. We have enough clout as is.

I personally would like to keep the Southeastern Conference in the southeast. I see Kansas and Missouri as more midwest.

If we go to 16 and A&M and Va Tech are two I'd say Missouri is the next step. We are adding the Texas and Virginia TV markets, Missouri and North Carolina are the next two.

I use to get into debates with a buddy who is from Maryland over whether he can claim himself as a southerner b/c he is from south of the Mason-Dixon line. I don't wanna hear a Missouri guy claim he is a southerner b/c Mizzou is in the SEC.

Let me tell you something about Missouri my friends. There were no people from any other state who fought longer or harder for the South than Missourians. In relative terms Georgians had it easy. Don't try to play the Missouri is not a Southern state card because if you do you will be wrong.

Where do you think the Missouri v. Kansas rivalry started? It comes from the fact that when the rest of the South was sitting with their thumbs up their asses and drinking mint juleps Missourians were swigging moonshine, riding into Kansas and killing the yankees from Massachusetts who resettled there.

i agree. missouri was really torn apart by the civil war. but that's not really my point. my point was about st. louis. and the fact that this would be a market for us to tap into. and it does touch arkansas. and mizzou has a good academic rep (even though that doesn't seem to matter too much on this board).

Being that Fayetteville is only 30 miles or so from the MO state line and we almost consider Branson a part of our metro as much as people from here visit, Arkansas fans should be most excited about the possibility of Mizzou.

But the reality is, I feel nothing about Mizzou. Not a thing. They sure don't seem like an SEC school. I don't view Missouri as "southern" at all.

I'm stoked for the Aggies, though.

St. Louis AND Kansas City. Not only Arkansas but Missouri also borders Kentucky and Tennessee.

I agree about the general feeling about academics. Screw academics. We are talking football not the GE College Bowl.

I don't want to be offensive but I never considered Arkansas or South Carolina to be anything more than SEC stepchildren.

The SEC has billion dollar tv deals because of the national appeal of the product on the field. The SEC, unlike the other conferences, doesn't need individual state markets, except maybe Texas.

No one outside of Alabama and Missouri would tune in to a matchup of bama vs mizzou. Missouri just isn't a brand that the country cares about.

People across the country would watch any one of LSU/Bama/UF/UGA/Aub/Tenn versus an FSU or Miami because they have a football brand.

The SEC won't just add a school because they are available. This isn't a 'draft' where the SEC just picks the best available school without a conference. The SEC will only add teams if it will make more money for the current members. There is a reason why the powers of the Big12 are packing it up and Missouri and Kansas are being left behind.

Missouri could be in a tough spot right now if the Big 10 doesn't pick them up though. It is possible that the SEC could pick them up but I think it would be more likely they would look at some ACC teams first.

Thanks for refreshing my history trivia.(not being sarcastic) Being in the military, I'm surrounded by folks from all over the country including a bunch of Missourans. I identify them as a culture being closer to Iowa, Indiana, and Illinois than that of Louisiana, Mississippi, or Alabama. What I'm saying is that I just don't think the culture of Mizzou would match that of other SEC schools as much as it would match Big Ten. I never lived in Missouri, I just have a lot of co-workers from there so I may not be as familiar to that state as you. I'm not trying to discredit their role 150 years ago, I'm just pointing out geographics.

I'd say the Tigers would have the best chance to win that one.

Coldhotwings:

Missouri borders Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Tennessee.

Missourians have a broad range of cultures from which to choose.

Since Ohio borders Kentucky, they also could be southerners I guess.
