Who's a good fit for Tulane Basketball? I don't see how they cannot be at least more competitive

Butch Pierre, come on down. Outside of the hotel in Boise in 2005 I was just hanging out to get away from all the other people and Butch was on the phone with his agent I suppose about taking the job but they went in a different direction. I'm sure interest would still be there if the money is right.

I wonder if they would have even looked at Floyd. He was on Patrick this morning, adamant that he broke no rules and said USC treated him guilty from jump

eta: IMO they need a big splash to get any kind of attention, UNO, Gillespie ain't it

"Asked if he wanted to continue coaching at Tulane, Dickerson said: “That’s a tough question; that’s a very difficult question. I think Tulane is one of the best institutions I’ve ever worked at as far as the perception of the university and academics. Me being a competitor, I would love to be at Tulane and have the opportunity to win Conference USA and get this team into postseason play. That was my goal when I took the job. But no one has ever given me a manual on how to deal with what I’ve had to deal with since I’ve been here at Tulane. So I understand that after every year there has to be an evaluation process and I’m pretty sure that Rick and our administration is evaluating me, and my family and I have to evaluate who we are and where we are at this stage of time also."

No way they would have touched him. There have been rumors that they are bumping up the athletic budget almost 5 million a year - starting next year. This increase can help bring in a quality coach (along with the lossening up of academic requirements for athletes - which Dickerson did not have).

Should be interesting to see who they can get.

The rumor was that he was already trying to get Tulane to buy him out and I am sure he used that interview to give Tulane no chioce but to part ways. No way you can expect a guy to recruit with comments like that flying around.

When I read his "That's a tough question" statement yesterday I didn't understand why they didn't fire him right there...I know I would have canned him 1 minute after I put the paper down

Heard Kaare last night talking about big doings for the athletic program. None of that will matter if they don't identify and hire better coaches.

That is why he said that. He wanted to get fired to get the buy out on his contract. i am sure after that statement they made an agreement and he resigned.

Did they get rid of Rodriguez? I don't think they had much say in the matter.

Tulane will have to resign themselves to the reality that as long as they remain in the FBS, they will need to look for up and coming coaches who will use the school as a stepping stone. Cincy and Louisville notwithstanding, I don't think TU can compete on a national level.

what about Johnny Jones?

CUSA is a step up from whatever conference North Texas is in, has local ties and has gotten NTexas into the NCAA tourney a couple of times

Why so much mystery over Tulane's crappy basketball program?
quote:

With news rampant that Tulane men's basketball Coach Dave Dickerson has either been fired or is resigning, the Times-Picayune got a call from Green Wave athletic director Rick Dickson a few minutes ago.

When asked if Dickerson's job status had changed, Dickson replied; "I can't answser that."
So it's been a month since the season ended, you've been evaluating Dickerson's future, and multiple sources have said he's out. And that's your answer?

Is it just me, or is Dickson not a really strong AD? I mean, he did hire Dickerson, Scelfo, and Toledo. And there doesn't seem to be any unifying philosophy for TU athletics. What exactly does he bring to the table?

He is a strong fund raiser. He has done pretty amazing things since the storm in that department (although I am still not too happy with him letting LSU out of the home and home football contract).

He did not hire Scelfo .. But I agree that his major hires have lacked a little ...

ETA : a lot of people think Sandy Barbour was the devil but she had all three major sports plus women's bball ranked in the top 30 in the country when she left the school.
