The guys on NFL Network said that if Gresham fell to #32 the Saints would take him. Wtf would we do with both Shockey and Gresham and Thomas while we have holes on defense? Do these guys know anything about NFL teams at all?

I agree with them. We'd be stupid if we didn't.

To be quite honest, they probably know more than you do. Not trying to be a dick.

It would be a miracle if shocky stayed healthy for a whole season.

You're right. That's why I don't work analyzing the NFL on television. What I'm trying to say, is that would you sacrifice upgrading the defense which is obviously a need to adding another weapon to an offensive system that is absolutely fine as is?

He probably doesn't fall that far, but look at Shockey's injury history, Payton's willingness to throw any type of formation out there, and that Gresham would most likely be the most talented player left on the board by far.

Doesn't seem like a shock to me that the Saints would take him, despite having needs at other positions.

We had the #1 offense with Shockey beat up for much of the year and Dave Thomas (who is coming back). You've really got diminishing returns on that side of the ball. Even if he is clearly the best player available, they need to work on the front 7 or FS is Sharper leaves and they want Jenkins to stay at CB.

You've got an unreliable TE who wants a long term deal and a dave thomas who is a great rotating TE. We utilize the TE position very much and if a TE is BPA...

One isn't that good and the other is about to retire or not be with the team next season.

The offense operates on a different level when Shockey is in their healthy, and Thomas is a role player. Glad to have him on the team, but nothing more.

Gresham would be a long term investment at an unstable position on the side of the ball that the HC is more concerned with.

If the choice was Gresham and one of the premier DE's like Morgan or Paul, then those 2 guys get the nod over Gresham. If it's Weatherspoon or Gresham I'd go Spooner.

If it's Carlos Dunlap or Gresham that gives me pause.

Probably can't argue, how much longer can Shockey stay healthy? Gresham has the chance to be an All-Pro TE in the league for years to come, but I suspect someone like Baltimore would probably take him

I think they are wrong.
It's possible they might want him b/c shockey is injury prone, but gresham has has 2 major knee surgeries himself, he is coming off of one of them, and he has trouble blocking and has been criticized for not "bringing the intensity" and he supposedly "shys away from blocking." However, despite these criticisms, i also think he could work well in our offense in the vertical passing game. I just think his injuries combined with our defensive needs make this a highly improbable pick.

It's not purely BPA. If Gresham is your #20 ranked player and Griffen is #22 and both are available I'd say the need might push the difference. If it was #20 Gresham and say McCourty, a CB as your #27 then Gresham sure.

Ya gotta look down the board too if you have TE ranked that high in need. Gronkowski or Hernandez could be available at #64. I could see Hernandez as a Dallas Clark clone in Payton's schemes. At #95 or maybe even #130 I like Jimmy Graham as a project with a good risk/reward ratio.

We lost all three games when Shockey was out. We especially missed his blocking & playmaking ability against the Cowboys. Gresham would provide insurance for Shockey's next injury, but this would still be a luxury pick.

Saints would have an excellent opportunity to trade down.

Gresham is a major TE talent and some team like Cincy, Baltimore, Atlanta, or New England might fight for the chance to jump back in the first round and grab a guy before some other schmuck does in the 2nd round.

(New England for example has 3 picks in the 2nd round: #12, #16, and #21)

I wouldn't mind dropping down and grabbing, say, a couple of 2nd rd picks to go with our #64 pick.

The 32nd pick would be too hard to try and pick up 2 2nd rounders, unless we got NE's bottom 2 for our 1st and 3rd

gresham is one of the better tight end prospects in quite some time.

if he is there i'm sure the saints would look at him. shockey is nearing his 9th or 10th season.. i really don't know the length of tight ends in the nfl, but gresham could definitely be his heir apparent.

I highly doubt it, even though he's a beast and has some injury concerns, someone will take him in the 1st rd. The smart move is to fill defensive needs in the 1st and 2nd rds, then if you're looking for a TE prospect, draft Dennis Pitta or Jimmy Grahm in the middle rounds.
