did Peyton Manning get NFL MVP?

I know this is old, and not important, not to mention Drew proved he deserved MVP in the Superbowl, but like I thought that it was closer.

I was looking at these stats and was just WTFing. Just felt like when you look at these stats... I mean there is no answer for Peyton getting the MVP.

If anyone has any reason for Peyton getting MVP tell me now... just wow. I mean it would be more logical for Brett Favre to have gotten it (god forbid).

Brees and Manning are basically even if you look at the stats since Brees arrived in NOLA. I would say he should get mire praise for the Saints being shitty before he got here.

That pick 6 in the SB hurt Manning's rep big time. All things being equal next year then Drew gets it.

because his last name is Manning.

Brees was easily more worthy.

This may be an unpopular take on the matter, but let me play devil's advocate:

Based on the 8 regular season rankings you provided, Manning's average ranking in all categories is 5.37 and Brees is ranked 5.12.

You can't include the post-season because the MVP award is given out before then. (Also, this wouldn't benefit Brees, as Manning had a better post-season from a statistical standpoint.)

Since 5.37 and 5.12 are virtually indistinguishable from each other, perhaps Brees was hurt by two factors:

1) The Colts had a better record. When voters were casting their ballots, the Saints were on a three game slide and finished a game behind the Colts.

2) Many uneducated voters feel that Sean Peyton is so good that his system provides a large portion of Brees's statistical outpouring. On the flip side, Manning was dealing with a rookie head coach and, for all intents and purposes, was the quarterback AND offensive coordinator.

Brees certainly deserves his due and if he repeats his numbers, he'll get it this season. But when two QBs are this close statistically, the more accomplished passer is going to get the nod. Now that Brees has his ring, I see him winning the close ones in the future. Not saying I agree with the system, but it is what it is.

I'm not sure Brees cares. He'd trade 10 MVPs for 1 SuperBowl any day

He who gets the hardware at the end of the game is the happiest.

Least we forget how a MVP looks after losing the super bowl.

I think the media perception of the Colts was that they won every game they tried to win, while the Saints lost to the Cowboys and the Bucs when they needed to win. That may have put him over the top.

I don't agree though.

This is the best answer right here. I can understand it from this point of view.

But just 109.6 to 99.9 is a big difference (rounded up 110 to 100 or 109 to 100.)

(And of course Drew Brees doesn't care.)

Because the MVP is a popularity contest, voted on by people that swore the Saints main problem was a weak defense and lack of a running game.

This. I wouldn't say EASILY more worthy, but they were as damn equal as any two candidates could ever be. I was extremely disappointed when Manning got it, but his team had the better record, only lost when they rested their players, and Manning already had a ring under his belt. Brees had the stats, but didn't have anyone slobbering on his dick like the national media did to Peyton. I also suspect that people looked at Manning's supporting cast of WR's and RB's and thought they were a less quality group as compared to the Saints, so Peyton had to do more with "less talent".

As for that last point, where would our WR corps as a whole rank if we didn't have Brees at QB? Without Brees putting the ball in the perfect spots for the for a few years, who is to say our offensive skill position groups would have the same "prestige" as they do? Would Colston, Meachem, Devery, Moore, Bush, Shockey, or David Thomas have anywhere near the stats they do without Brees getting them the ball? Brees is the single piece that makes our offense the best in the league. Yet, to be fair, Manning is the general in command of Indy, and without him they wouldn't be anywhere near where they are as well.

However, I'll give Manning the regular season ANY frickin day if Brees can get the SUPERBOWL MVP BABY!!!! SBMVP > RSMVP

Peyton Manning was doing this with a no name rookie head coach, no name wide receivers, mediocre line and mediocre running back group. Had a better record and Drew Brees lost a huge game against Dallas on national television which was the beginning of a 3 game slide to end the season.

Chad, that may be your most succinct smartassless answer in history. right on

They vote for MVP before the playoffs too I believe. We and Brees will take Super Bowl MVPs over league MVPs anyday.

Manning has controlled that offense for years. There's no way in hell a rookie head coach is going to mess with that, so that point doesn't really prove he was regular season MVP worthy.

no name wide receivers

Reggie Wayne and Dallas Clark were no name WR's?

mediocre line

They allowed 10 sacks, 10, in the whole regular season. Thats HALF of what the Saints line did for Brees. I'd call that line better than mediocre this year.

mediocre running back group

Before this year, outside of us Saints fans, who REALLY considered Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, and Mike Bell as a mediocre or above RB corps? Not me. After this season, they are an excellent group which is due to many factors including OL actually run blocking, but previous to this season, no one outside of NOLA considered PT to be a better runner than Addai...

That is the reason I believe he won it. The Dallas game. And my previously stated reasons that his last name was Manning and he already had a SB ring.

But anyway, I hope you were joking.

Yes............although Brees also beat Manning in yards per attempt and yards per completion.

Let's rewind the clock and make Super Bowl 44 a reality show -- call it "Life Swap" for lack of a better name off the top of my head -- and Manning and Brees switch teams after the conference championship games. Give 'em an extra week of preparation since they're new to their teams, and you know they'll want to take their preparation to new levels for this.............Do the Colts win it with Brees under center, or does a Manning finally lead New Orleans to an NFL championship?

Another idea I don't mind considering: Was Darren Sharper the MVP?
