So I'll give it a go here. My 9th grade daughter came home from school saying the teacher - who was not at school today - had left instructions for the sub to show "Sweenie Todd" to the class. I have never seen this movie but have heard some things about it. In your opinion, is this an appropriate movie to show to 9th graders?

9th grade = high school
i haven't seen the movie, but i know that it isn't porn.
so yeah it is acceptable imho.
gotta let her grow up sometime.

9th grade.....uh no....
Any rated R movie would likely be a no no for high school kids. I think it was only rated R b/c of violence though so it would be borderline.
I wouldn't give a frick, but it was a bad idea on the teachers part.

Yes, this. If you say no, your daughter will most likely the only one in the class not allowed to watch it. It might seem a while back, but think of the things you would do or thought you were mature enough to handle as a 9th grader. Multiply it even more because times have changed.

I would not have been very happy about this.

By the time I was in 9th grade I had seen things 100 times worse than Sweeney Todd

Her mind will be warped permanently after watching it.

If there was no consent form the teacher could get in some real trouble.
Especially if this was the hardcore porn knockoff of Sweeney Todd.

No, no, there wasn't any "allowing" anything. It was done today without any parents' knowledge.

A 9th grader watching Sweeney Todd isn't bad or out of the ordinary. A teacher showing a class of 9th graders Sweeney Todd may cause some parents to be upset because of the amounts of blood and deaths. One could argue that it wouldn't be as bad as a history teacher showing his/her class a graphic war movie, but I'm sure that's just hypothetical tit for tat.

over protective much?
she's gonna get all tatted up and shite if you keep this up.

It's got some pretty graphic violence in it, but if she's in high school, she's probably seen worse in other movies. It's graphic, but pretty over the top, almost cartoonish too. Not sure if a freshman class is the proper audience, but she should come out of the viewing pretty unscathed.

Was it the R rated movie with Depp, the 1982 tv version with Angela Lansbury, or some other version of the movie? I just can't imagine a teacher having a sub show an R rated movie to her 9th grade class.

Go give that teacher hell. I'm sure it'll be the highlight of their already shitty day. Or why don't you stop being so naive. It wasn't Chica Boom 18.
My history teacher showed us Schindler's List in the ninth grade. There were parents who called the school to complain.
Jesus people.

Only reason I would care is the movie adds nothing to my child's education. Watch some documentary on history whatever. Not some Hollywood movie. The movie itself I wouldn't care if my child saw it in 9th grade at the movies with friends or family. No reason for it in school.

i watched braveheart in the 9th grade

I'm guessing this was a drama class FWIW? Or was the sub just killing time?
