Problem is, it's doubtful the owners will budge.

If this happens, the Saints could make a play for Peppers. Correct?

If this happens, the Saints are fricked. Don't worry about Peppers, worry about the assload of contributors that are going to cost you 2-3 times as much to keep.

Let's hope. Uncapped free agency isn't nearly the $ free for all that the players thought it would be. Long term, the cap will be pretty important to the Saints), but let's hope this happens next year.

Oh, and be prepared to see Grant for at least one more year, and get ready to be bidding with the entire NFL on Jahri as opposed to only teams willing to give up a 1 and a 3 (few to none). If it were to happen, the NFL had better give teams a chance to apply franchise tags to guys that would have been restricted (Evans, Dumerville, Ray Edwards, Thomas Davis, Demeco Ryans, Miles Austin off the top of my head).

If (and it's a big if at this point) this turns out to be the turning point in negotiations, surely there will be some relief to teams who have already issued tenders to affected FA's.

It sounds like they are just trying to make the owners look bad. Why else give a press release saying you are making every effort to get a deal done and while the other side is not helping. They want the owners to look like the bad guy.

The players union has been willing to sign an extension for months now.

This is nothing new. Just posturing in the media.

No way the owners will go for this and who could blame them. It is apparent that the NFL Player's union is trying to make the owner look bad by attempting to put a deal out during the pending hours remaining for the uncapped year. To be quite honest, the players are at a disadvantage hear with the extension of restricted free agency which negative impacts the players and not the owners.

Owners are spanking da arse.

I blame them. If I miss a season of NFL and one of the few 6-7 years left of the best Saints QB ever bc the owners got greedy then frick them

no you must have heard wrong.

an NFL franchise is a license to print to money.

Some make more than others yes, but no NFL team is in danger of losing money let alone going bankrupt.

Some of the more prominent owners like him with the big mouths and greedy pockets. Dude just wants to fatten his pockets to make up for that ridiculous arse money pit he just finished constructing.

That's not what this fella is saying:

I think they all are just pissed about the salary cap ceiling going up from $93m in 2005 to $127m last year and they want the players to scale back a bit. Owners who have had their teams for a while are of course making bank, but I've heard the owner typical owner profits are estimated to be in the $25m a year range. With the going rate of a franchise being in the $1B range, and cities looking to get away from paying for stadiums, there's limited reason to get into the business aside from having a badass toy.

Who is that guy? Not sarcastic at all, I tried to google his name and came up empty. I assume he is a VIP of some kind probably from the league office. Just never heard of him.

True and many owners silently blame Tags for this issue.

Depends on what you mean by typical. Small market , public owned Green Bay reported a profit of 20 million last year. The NFL refuses to open their books though, even to the NFLPA, so hard to really get an idea what the "typical" owner makes.

Remember though even with the cap at $120+ million the Packers made 20 million in PROFIT. Thats a lot of money.

How many teams own their stadiums like the Redskins and Cowboys(the highest valued teams) or have sweet deals in place with their states?

As for limited reasons, NFL owners don't buy their team for short term gain. Owning an NFL team is a long term process.

Also, since the estimated value of teams is around $1 billion, and has risen consistently for almost all teams every year, once you buy a team you can almost assuredly sell it for more than you paid for it. That is not including any profits an owner may make in between.

I understand the owners desire to lower the players piece of the pie, (and maybe it should be lower) but NFL owners pleading poverty is not understandable IMO.
