First thing... to be clear, I have no problem with the passing game coordinator position. I just wonder how it all fits when it relates to Gary Crowton and our all-powerful offense.

Gary Crowton has been known as an offensive "wizard" over the last decade or so. Now in 2009, we were basically awful on offense, whether you want to blame youth, injuries, offensive line play or just bad playcalling/player management.

So Miles goes out and hires a guy away from a top tier college program and bestows the title of passing game coordinator on him (along with WRs coach).

So in my mind, there are two possibilities.

A) The "coordinator" portion was added in as a way to woo BG to our side. He'll work with Crowton on routes and yada yada. We're stuck with the "wizard" and the wizard has an apprentice.

B) Les has other ideas. He's allowing Crowton to look for a job, or will can him, and BG will move up from passing game coordinator to full blown coordinator. Like it or not. I personally can't see Crowton leaving and another coordinator hired. If GC leaves, I think BG is our guy, like it or not.

But, if you're Gary Crowton, 2009's performance aside, what are you thinking when your "wizard" reputation is challenged by the hiring of an additional coordinator that will basically be helping out with the part of offense you are supposed to have mastered? Your boss basically thinks you need help. Is it possible he WANTS to leave?

Discuss.

I didn't think we did that at LSU any more?

All kidding aside, maybe someone is brought in to do that and only that. More of a low cost solution than a giant six figure salary for a big time OC.

Well, if we hire a QB coach then Miles has to coach something, or have STUD coach OL and TE.

No way he wants to leave with the money he is making. Derek Dooley at La Tech. is coach and AD and his salary is listed as $465,000 a year.

How about this...he took away some of Crowtons OC status and gave it to BG and kept it out of the media. I think this is a strong possibility!

. But crowton still makes the same money. I doubt this. Unless Les takes a cut for gc to make his usual, it ain't happenin

no, they went out and hired a new QB coach to work with Tebow when Mullen left.

no, he was a WR. not that he couldn't at some point coach QBs, or that his new role won't involve working with the QBs, but he hasn't yet.

I think the title was partially to justify whatever pay he's getting (he was also recruiting coord at UF, and Wilson has that now), and also to give him some ability to "spice up" the offense, assist in the gameplanning and maybe enable Crowton to focus in a bit more on QB development.

FWIW, Crowton himself has said that he campaigned to get Gonzales on the staff, when he joined. He may be full of shite, but that's what he said.

If that's true, it hardly sounds like he's offended by Gonzales's presence.

I was hoping it was an excuse to implement UF's offense.

This scenario certainly sounds like something Les would do, but if he hitches his wagon to a WR coach he is further gone than anyone of us could have imagined.

Crowton calls the plays. BG does the substitutions.
